SOURCE: i bought dirt bike for husband! is 2005 yamaha

Congrats on the purchase! easy way to tell look at the exhaust pipe. if it is just a thin tube that is tight to the engine and goes right to the muffler it is a 4 stroke (250f). the four strokes have a square-ish head. Deep/bass-y engine sound. If you have a large (probably black) exhaust pipe with a large bulge in it (5-6" diameter) that wraps around the front of the frame, its a 2-stroke. They have a more round cylinder head. Beautiful pingy sound and a little smokey at start up. DON'T FORGET TO MIX YOUR GAS!!! there should be a serial number sticker at the very front of the frame (behind the number plate where your triple clamp/handlebars connect) Probably on the left side. Hope it helps! rate please :)

SOURCE: YZ125 won't start

check the condition of the spark plug two strokes go thru plugs like no other. if a new plug does not help check to see if you are getting a bright blue spark at the plug while kicking it over. also make sure the fuel is fresh and is mixed with oil properly to much oil will foul out a plug fast if all else fails try a compression test it should be in the range of 130-150 psi.

2000 yz125 keeps on fouling out plugs

Fouled plugs are typically caused by jetting that is too rich. This could also be from a dirty air filter which can make the bike run rich. Clean up your filter and see if that is it. If the filter is not too bad, you might want to drop a size on your pilot or main.

Another possibility is poor compression - this can make a 2-stroke run richer than normal as the fuel can not be burned properly. Rings don't last long in these 125s. I used to re-ring each week when I was racing 125s.

You might want to run a B8ES plug, too - this is one step hotter and will help the plug from fouling as often.
