Question about 1978 Honda GL 1000 (K3)

'78 Honda GL1000 backfiring right stalling under acceleration

This old bike has just 63K on it but she needs a good general going over beginning with sorting out the backfiring and acceleration stall.
. The engine starts well It idles well it backfires from the right exhaust only. Also the engine stalls on sharp acceleration . I realize that these could be separate issues but together they probably make sense to an expert.
Engine compression and timing have been checked by an Auto mechanic and were found ok .
Is it worthwhile to change to electronic ignition right away or would that simply add one more unknown to the mix. I just picked the old girl up on a trade and as a winter project and I would sure appreciate some help from a reputable and qualified source . Thanks

You want to start with a valve adjustment, 0.004 ths, then set the timing, then the points at the high end 0.016 ths. this will create better voltage at the coils. Then sync the carbs last. It must be done in this order to give you the best results. If you need anymore info just call me. # (864) 993-9482 Ralan

Hi, Michael my guess is you may have a weak battery or one of your ignition ballast's has gone south for this scenario you will need your service/owners manual if you can't find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Honda, despair not, for a mere zero $0 you can download another one. Why my TVS Victor Glx bike misfire on breaks application or de accelerated .Mileage is around 30.Spark plug is replaced, regular service is done.it's accelerate a lot when fuel is going to finish.Help

Hi, Anonymous popping or backfiring on deceleration is usually caused by a lean fuel condition or an air leak in the exhaust system and is generally located where black carbon soot is seen as a flashing build up from any joint connection. This condition can easily be remedied by removing and cleaning both joint pieces and reassembling with high temp silicone and torquing the exhaust clamp to the proper spec. Coughing is usually caused by an air leak in the intake system and will generally have the same telltale signs, a wet or damp buildup of oil/gas seepage at the intake manifold to cylinder head or carburetor to intake manifold connection and in rare instances a worn throttle plate shaft and or seals. Spitting is usually caused by a faulty accelerator pump and or nozzle, or the float bowl needle and seat leaking and overflowing through the main jet mixing well nozzle, or the air-fuel mixture screw is adjusted too lean. 1983 honda gold wing 1100 ,120,000 klm, runs great .When should one be doing a clutch change?

If you go easy on the clutch and do not pull a trailer, you may never have to replace the clutch. My GL1000 clutch has over 150,000 Miles (around 240,000 km) on it and works just fine

Bike seems to be losing power and stalling when changing down gears. it will tick over when sitting no problem only when riding it will happen, any ideas.

It almost sounds like dirty or sticking carburetor tops. Some vacuum carburetors have floating pistons. When they get dirty they stick causing all kinds of erratic accelerations and decelerations . I own several Honda Gl1000 Goldwings and yearly maintenance includes taking off the carb tops and cleaning the pistons. Like wise some bikes use vacuum carburetors with rubber diaphragms. These can suffer many of the same problems of they get dirt or carbon on them. They can also crack or tear and cause poor performance. I would start with a carburetor top inspection and cleaning.

Hesitates and backfires through the exaust when accelerating

Sounds as if your timing is not quite right. You need a manual, but The best I can offer is a 98: http://www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp , it may help, but if you only have 1100 miles on it, I would be taking it to a qualified mechanic to be fixed. Up to you.

1995 honda xr 600r has been backfireing upon acceleration

Are you talking about "backfiring" out the exhaust or "spitting back" through the carb?

Backfiring through the exhaust under acceleration is rare. If he ignition is misfiring, unburned fuel and air mixture is exhausted into the exhaust system. The next time the plug fires, it ignites this mixure. In other words, your engine is "missing" and your ignition system needs attention.

If it's "spitting back" out of the carb, this is usually an indication of a lean mixture. If it's doing it at wide open throttle, you might need to go up one size one your main jet. If it's doing it under less than full throttle acceleration, raise your needle up one notch and try it again. You want to richen the mixture just a bit. Too much and the bike will get sluggish.
