with smoke from the unit .I would say you are up for another unit as to get smoke something has overheated and burnt/shorted out

The speedometer will need to be removed and repaired/replaced as this is a faulty winding in the speedometer head which is sticking.

The mechanism or needle in the actual speedo display is sticking, is the needle hitting the glass? It is likely that you will have to change the instrument cluster.

The first thing you can always do is check your fuses. there might a blown fuse that need replacement.The 1990 Legacy has a mechanical speedometer . The speed sensor is a read switch in the speedometer head itself. So if your speedometer is functioning ( needle working properly ) then the internal read switch is defective. That requires replacing the entire speedometer OR it can be a defective connection between the speedometer and the ECU.If the speedometer is not working, then you can have a defective speedometer, cable, speedometer cable adapter ( on the tranny ) or internal speedo gear in the tranny. The speedometer is faulty and will need to be replaced. Only a Nissan dealer can change a speedometer head legally.

Unscrew the knurled nut from the back of the speedometer, unscrew the other end from the transmission tailshaft, and feed the cable through the grommet in the firewall. Slide the cable out from the sheath and clean it off with carb cleaner or brake cleaner and spray the inside of the sheath with the same. Oil the cable with light oil like mineral oil, transmission fluid, or power steering fluid and put back in the sheath, then put the cable back in place. If it still doesn't work replace the cable with a new one. If that doesn't do it, take out the plastic speedometer drive gear from the transmission and check for wear. If it is worn, replace it. If that doesn't do it, push off the nearest cliff. Just kidding on that last comment. The first fix usually worked for me, and when it didn't the second would. There is no cable on the 93 Prizms.  The problem is one of two things, either the "vehicle speed sensor" or the instrument cluster itself.   I also have a 93, and the speedometer started acting up a while ago. Sometimes it would register 0 then it would spike up to 70 and stay there at highway speeds then back to 0 upon slowing.  I replaced both items from the junk yard.  The speed sensor at an auto parts store will run about $160, and a new cluster will cost A LOT more at the dealer! I first replaced the speed sensor with no luck ($5.00 at the junkyard) the same thing happened 0 or 70.   I replaced the cluster today ($13.99 at the junkyard).  That was it! Problem solved.  The cluster is EASY to replace, remove the 2 screws from the trim piece and remove trim.  Next, remove the 4 screws that hold the cluster in place; 2 at the very top (don't remove the ones just above the cover glass) and two at the bottom.  Pull one side of the cluster out; there are 3 plugs; squeeze the center of the plugs to release the clip and wiggle them free.  Connect the replacement cluster, but before screwing it in, do a check to make sure all the panel lights work.  I had a few that were burned out, so I used the old cluster lights to replace them.   I would try replacing the cluster first.  Good luck!

Replace the Speedometer Cable

1 - Remove the old speedometer cable from your car, first take off the doghouse and then the engine cover.

2 - Remove the screw underneath the dashboard and take down the steering column. This will give you access to the back of your speedometer.

3 - Take off the drive shaft bolt, and "O" ring, insert the speedometer cable through the firewall.

4 - Remove speedometer cable securing clamps from the engine compartment and on the transmission.

5 - Release the drive shaft nut from the "right angle" adapter (The nut is attached to the back of the transfer case).



Installing the Speedometer Cable

1 - Place the square end of the speedometer cable into the adapter and secure the drive shaft nut.

2 - Pull the speedometer cable through the firewall to the rear of the speedometer.

3 - Secure the "O" ring and attach the speedometer cable to the rear of the speedometer/odometer. It should be engaged in the speedometer's square hold. Tighten the drive shaft nut again.

4 - Replace the clamps that will secure the speedometer cable onto the transmission and in the engine compartment. Replace the engine cover.

5 - Drive your car slowly to be sure your speedometer is working properly. If it is, replace the doghouse. If you're stilling having problems, take the car to your mechanic.
