Changing the oil in a 1986 sportster

I"ve removed a drain plug from the gearbox but only a quart of oil came out. Where is the drain for the rest of the engine, and how do I get oil back in the gear box?

There are three drain plugs in every bike and all are present nearby locations.
for your knowledge ,all(3) the plugs will be of same size and shape.
open all of them and remove all the oil.
when refilling oil, first fit all the plugs except the top plug.and then pour the oil using and cutted bottle or tin piece.

How much and type of gear box oil do I have to use in my mk4 golf, 1.6 litre engine transmission( gearbox)

Mark 4 VW Golf Manual Gearbox
VW has a specific blend of gear oil for that gearbox that you need to buy from VW dealer Parts department. If you cannot get it there, you can use a 75w-90 fully synthetic automotive gear oil .

The capacity is about 2.2 quarts (US) so ensure you buy enough.

If you are changing the gear oil yourself the vehicle must be level. Completely loosen or remove the fill plug first, to ensure you will be able to refill it ,before you remove the drain plug and drain the old oil out of the box. You will need a fluid pump in order to pump the new oil into the box and you keep adding the gear oil until it begins to run out the fill opening. It is full when it stops running out the fill opening so it is important the vehicle is level when you are doing this service.

You will need a good 17 mm Allen key to remove and refit the drain and fill plugs in the gearbox.
The fill plug is on the front left side of the transmission case while the drain plug is on the bottom by the dog bone.

Recently bought a 2003 1200 sportster. Specifically asked the previous owner about shutting off petcock when not in use. He indicated it was not necessary as it had a carb drain feature. I've put...

Your 2003 Sportster should have been equipped with a vacuum operated petcock unless someone has changed it out. This is highly likely since the factory units were very prone to problems. To drain the primary, look for a pipe plug underneath the primary at the very back underneath the area of the clutch. Refill with one quart of H-D 20W50 SYN3 engine oil or any other suitable lubricant.

I have a 2004 xl883 converted to 1200 need to change the fluids. does the transmission and the primary use the motor oil that you are putting in bike or is it differant. and when you drain oil and...

You engine uses three quarts of 20W50 oil. The primary and transmission share the same oil and it uses about a quart of oil. One the late model Big Twins, you can use H-D's Syn 3 in all areas. Not sure about the Sportster. I've always used the H-D primary/transmission lubricant for Sportsters. If you wish to use any other brand of lubricant, you need to go to their website and check to see what they say use in what area. Some of the other popular lubricants are Amsoil, Royal Purple, Mobil V-Twin, and Red Line.

Have been asked to do a oil change on a Harley Davidson 1200, evo year 2004, not like other Harelys , dont no where to start

If it's a 2004 1200 Evolution, it must be a Sportster. To change the oil, look on the right side of the bike below the battery tray. There is a hose with either a plug in it or it plugs onto the frame somewhere behind the primary cover. Take the clamp off and remove the plug or pull the hose off the dummy frame part and the oil tank will drain. Refill with three quarts of oil.

If you change the primary/ transmission oil. the drain is underneath the rear most part of the primary. Remove the plug and drain the primary. Refill with a quart of oil added at the primary chain inspection hole.

HOW TO CHANGE OIL

Look down on the left side of the bike, below the battery and behind the primary. You should see either a plugged hose or a hose that appears to plug onto the frame. This is the oil drain. Remove the plug or take the hose off the stub on the frame and the oil will drain out. Change the filter and refill the tank with three quarts of 20W50 oil.

How to do a transmission oil chage on a 1980 sportster

There is a drain plug under the back end of the primary cover. Drain the oil and refill through the primary chain inspection hole. There is a "fill level plug" on the outer primary towards the front. Remove this plug and fill until oil runs out of the hole. Should take almost a whole quart when bike is standing straight up.

Does an 01 sportster 1200 have an oil bath. clutch. This persons tried to change his own oil pulled two different plugs one oil was clean one was was not. It has a hard time shifting now

Yes it does. It should take about a quart of oil in the primary. Some primary covers have an oil level indicator hole at the very back of the primary just bit above the lowest point. The drain plug is underneath the primary. If you have an "oil level plug", remove it and add oil until it comes out of the hole. If you can't find a level hole, drain the primary and refill with one quart of oil

Gearbox oil change

There should be a drain plug either on the bottom of the gearbox or on the side of the gearbox at the bottom. Put in fresh 10w40 motor oil. There will be an oil fill screw either on the left or right side of the gearbox case.

How much oil do I put in my 06yz250f and where are the drain plugs?

1.06 quarts w/o filter change > 1.27 quarts with filter change. 10w40 motor oil, any major brand. The gearbox drain plug is on the left case a little lower than the shift pedal.
