Loud niose when changing gear

It is making a louder than normal niose when engaging gears? oil level is fine any ideas

If oil level is regular, it is most likely part of the tranny, sincros, clutch plate, ect.

1994 shift only when overdrive is off.


first thing to check is transmission oil level and quality. If that is fine than your looking at either a valve body problem (valve body is what controls the selection of gears) or possibly a problem with the bands on the planetary gear set, they can be tightened in certain models. However i dont think it is the bands.
Does the overdrive only engage 4th gear? or does it feel like the gear ratios are different between overdrive and normal before the problem happened? some overdrive buttons engage final gear and some do as much as change gear ratios like in a cvt (contantly variable transmission) and some just change the timing in the gear changes to provide more rpm/power.
My best guess is that the valve controlling the overdrive in the valve body has failed and therefor you dont get a response from the transmission (i.e no gear shifting when overdrive is selected)

When i am in third gear the car engine starts to sound louder, like a motorcuylce not as loud but the noise changes.. it has 60,000 miles just oil changes i have doen on this car, is it time for a tune up...


You hear the engine or the transmission? If is the engine is doing it at all gears, if is only at third gear, is the transmission, change the transmission oil with a 80-90 or higher No. if still make noise, You have to open the transmission for service. Hope that help.

Hello, I was just changing gears and the clutch was still working but the gears stopped engaging. Any ideas what could be wrong?


There are three parts to a standard shift transmission's clutch assembly. Clutch disk, Pressure plate, and release bearing. If any of these fail there is a loud noise. Since you haven't heard anything disturbing, I think these parts are OK. If everything was running fine until the moment the gears stopped engaging the problem may lie in the transmission itself. If I understand correctly the gears are grinding instead of going into the next gear. Have the transmission checked out to see if it is low on oil or damaged. A mechanic will drain the oil and check for pieces of metal.

The engine loses power when 1st gear is engaged,


This sounds like a broken tooth on the main axle. This would account for the lump in every gear and a power loss due to the axle being bent also. I would change the axle, support bearings, and the gear the axle engages. Check the output shaft for bending also.

This could be bad bearings on the shafts but is is highly unlikely if the gearbox oil has been kept at proper levels. In any event, the gearbox will need to be opened up for inspection.

I have a suzuki rm 125 1994 model when i pull the clutch lever in to put it in gear the clutch doesnt work t jst crunches into gear


Adjust the clutch cable to allow about 1/4" free play at the end of the clutch handle. Don't put the bike in gear until the rpms are near idle speed. The clutch is working fine if the bike does not lurch forward when going into gear at idle speed. Dirty, gritty oil in the gearbox can make the clutch grab. Consider changing oil if grabbing is the problem. The "crunch" you hear is the slider gear engaging into the driven gear. The higher the engine speed when being put into gear the louder the crunch. The slider gear engaging "dogs" can break. Crunching into gear is hard on the gears.

Loud Downshift


My 2004 Sporty shift pedal is "notchy" especially when cold (allow 20-30 sec. of idle after starting) to allow time for oil to wet the shift forks and gear assemblies before shifting into first driving off. Also when down shifting, I usually do NOT use engine/trans gear braking on the street to save wear and tear on the clutch and running gear...brake pads are a lot easier (and cheaper) to replace over the long haul
