White film inside fuel tank coming off.

Cant damage outside paint its a canadien edition bike need repair for inside tank cannot replace paint on outside.

Sorry - misunderstood.
sounds like Kreem tank sealer or similar (there are lots of brands...) - treat for same.

  • Work in a well ventilated area
  • Don't have ignition sources around (if you light-up, you might REALLY light-up!)
  • Be aware that acetone can eat away at a nice paint job, wipe it off immediately
  • Sucking acetone fumes into a shop vac can cause fire from the electric
MATERIALS:


1. two gallons of acetone
2. 3 foot length of chain - the type of brass chain used for plant hangers works well.
3. large drip pan
4. two fabricated petcock hole covers
5. tank epoxy from Caswell or other suitable tank conditioner(?)
6. shop vacuum that can be set to blow
7. baggies
8. optional expandable rubber plug for fuel fill hole
9. 10 mm wrench (open-end helps) for dealing with sender unit
10. wire cutter (may be needed for sender unit)
11. plenty of shop rags
12. replacement O-rings for petcock gaskets
PROCEDURE IN DETAIL: 1. drain tank of all gas
2. remove petcocks
3. remove fuel gage float/sender unit
4. fabricate covers to cover petcock holes
5. remove gaskets from petcocks
6. use petcock gaskets with fabricated covers and install on tank
7. disconnect lead wires from sender unit (may have to cut and then reattach later)
8. use gasket from sender unit, install sender unit backwards on tank with float on the outside
9. pour chain into tank
10. pour gallon of acetone into tank
11. install leak proof cap (I suggest using an expandable rubber drain plug, but I just held the fuel cap down tight)
12. check for leaks
13. shake periodically, to remove rust and Kreem (keep in tank at least a day shake often enough to keep the Kreem damp prior to draining or it will re-solidify)
14. open one petcock hole and sender unit port and drain out the acetone saturated with Kreem and rust
15. remove chain - use a coathanger.
16. CAUTION acetone fumes are flammable and can ignite with the motor of a shop vacuum. Manually remove them.
17. reseal tank sender unit port and petcock holes
18. pour in 1/2 gallon of fresh acetone
19. shake often
20. remove one petcock cover
21. drain acetone into drip pan
22. replace petcock cover and gasket
23. filter the used acetone through a coffee filter into a mason jar (use the mason ring to hold filter)
24. pour in the filtered acetone (or use fresh)
25. add fresh if needed
26. shake periodically
27. repeat steps 20 to 25
28. remove petcock cover and drain tank contents
29. remove all other seals
30. use shop vac and hook it up for BLOWING.
31. Place hose over fuel filler hole and dry the inside of the tank very thoroughly (outside, of course)
32. Reseal petcock holes and sender unit port, but this time, use baggies between the tank and the gaskets to protect them from the resin. Note that I had to buy new O-rings anyway because my official Yamaha petcock gaskets were too deformed to seal after this process.
33. thoroughly mix the Caswell Tank epoxy (I used a drill attachment)
34. pour into the fuel filler hole and seal it.
35. rotate the tank, shake it, rotate it several minutes to cover all inside surfaces
36. continue for about 20 minutes or so (might depend on the temperature)
37. remove a petcock cover and drain excess epoxy
38. remove other petcock cover and sender unit
39. wipe off epoxy drips with acetone rag around open holes
40. let epoxy firm a little, install all screws with a drop of light machine oil, and then remove all screws to clear off threads, then let cure at least over night
41. Reassemble
That is, if you want to reseal it...

Fuel lines are generally fixed by replacement of the fuel line because the rubber it is made of deteriorates from age and alcohol contained in gas. Before you begin, make a mental note or take a picture of how the fuel line runs from the tank to the carburetor so you will be able to put the replacement in the same position.
On most chainsaws you need to take some wire, make a u-shaped end, which will be used to grab the fuel filter in the fuel tank. Drain the fuel in the tank. Disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor. Generally there are two lines on the carburetor, one for fuel, the other line creates suction used to pump fuel and is connected to the motor, not the fuel tank . Just disconnect the fuel line, it is usually on the side of the carburetor and will leak gas when disconnected. Once this is done, using the wire, gently grab and pull the filter towards the filler opening and using needle nose pliers grab the fuel line above the filter and pull. The problem you may have, is if the fuel line is in bad shape it will break, But once you have the filter off the fuel line, the fuel line can be pulled out from either the inside of the tank or from where it comes out of the tank and goes to the carburetor. Once it is removed you are ready to put the new fuel line in.
It is best to put the fuel filter on the fuel line next. It easier than trying to put it on inside of fuel tank going out. Spray some WD40 or equivalent, on the outside of the gas line, to help the line squeeze through the whole in the back of the tank, which it will have the go through. From the outside of the tank, where the fuel line comes out, fish some wire inside the tank and put the fuel line on the end of it, making sure not to pierce or damage the fuel line. If needed a piece of black tape will hold the wire better and help fit the line through outside hole. Once the fuel line is on the wire, pull it through carefully out the other side of the tank. It is best to use your fingers to pull the line through the outside hole, it makes it less likely the line will get torn or overstretched as line goes through the hole because of the extra rubber used on the line to seal the tank from inside and outside. Once the line is pulled through and seated, run the other end to the carburetor and you are done.

I have a 2001 dyna low rider. This winter I took the tank off to paint it. I put everything back together and fired it up and got a block before it shut down. I got it back home and checked the fuel lines....


It sounds like the carburetor is running out of gas. If you have the original petcock on the tank, you MUST have the vacuum line connected. When the engine starts up, vacuum from the carburetor is applied to the vacuum diaphragm in the petcock and opens the petcock. Without vacuum on the petcock, the only fuel you will get to the carb is if the needle valve in the petcock leaks.

Now, you said you had the tank painted. This is the clue. Painters pay a lot of attention to the outside of the tank but NONE to the inside. I would guess that the screen on the inside of your tank is completely blocked with small chips of paint or sanding material.

Replace the vacuum operated petcock. It's a "Motorhike" waiting to happen. A "motorhike" what you do when your bike quits and you wind up pushing it. I've seen too many of these things leave people stranded with a full tank of fuel but not a drop in the carb. Replace the OEM petcock with a high quality manually operated petcock like the old timers use. A Pingle is a very good choice. If you want to save a few bucks, check on the price of an OEM petcock for a 1995 or earlier model. Block the vacuum line off and I'd advise an inline fuel filter. Buy the sintered metal type filter that can be cleaned. These filters come in Chrome, and a few anodized colors as well.

White pictures when taken outside


The lens has suffered impact and the shutter or aperature blades have been damaged and are jamming. The camera needs repair / replacement parts.

Gas tank on 85 harley has white film coming off inside of tank.


It is the plastic lacquer. all you can do is rub it down, polish it and recover it.
I would decide it was time for new paint, send it off for blasting and start from scratch!

Paint protection


It sounds as if you are willing to do the right thing and get it coated or painted, right? What you need is not necessarily a clearcoat, but a better paint. Unless you use urethane paint, like they use on today's bikes, gas will dull or melt your tank paint. I'm not saying you can soak the think in gas, but you can spill fuel all over it, and just wipe it off without damage. Needs to be the top quality, urethane based auto paint. Costs more than the old DuPont Imron, but it's well worth it, looks great, and is gas-proof with or without the accompanying clear layer. I have restored many old bikes, and finally found out the hard way, not to scrimp on the tank paint! Good Luck. TT
