If the starter is turning and not turning the engine, or if it will not turn it over, but will when it is uninstalled, it is probably the starter idler gear.

My yamaha thunderace wont start you press the start button and the celenoid just whines the starter motor spins ok when direct power is supplied

Hi, Anonymous your starter motor is not/was not the problem that dubious title goes to the starter drive/Bendix/clutch which is a separate component that is activated by the starter motor it is a mechanical gear driven part that engages the clutch pack to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Bike wont start

It could be bad starter or a loose connection. Another thing to look at are the safety switches. Do you have to hold in the clutch to start the bike if it is in gear? There is probably a switch connected to the clutch lever for that purpose, that also could be bad.

Bike wont start , the solenoid just clicks

If you push the start button and the solenoid clicks the button is good. Find the solenoid ( usually by the battery follow the positive cable.) and jump the two posts with a screw driver, piece of wire , or jumper cables if the starter now works you need a new solenoid. At this point you either have a bad battery or a bad starter. Jump the bike with a good automotive battery (can be in the car just make sure car is not running or you could damage bike.) If bike starter still does not work try new starter brushes for a Goldwing they are cheao and easy to replace. If brushes look good ( not down to wear marks ) you need a starter ( bad armature ). I'm guessing the solenoid is bad (first choice) or you need brushes. Good Luck

Starting fault

There are two safety switches that you may need to test. 1) Neutral safety switch- this switch is what tells the bike that it's in neutral and allows the starter to engage. 2) Kickstand safety switch- this switch will not allow the bike to run in gear if the kickstand is down. My initial guess is the neutral safety switch. If the neutral safety switch is bad, then you will not be able to start the bike with the kickstand down because the bike thinks that it's in gear (even if in neutral). This also may explain why the initial intermitent problem of not starting when warm since the metal contacts will expand and possibly not make contact when warmed up. Are you trying to start the bike with the kickstand up or down? If it were the kickstand safety switch, the bike would probably start okay and then die when you put it in gear.

2004 Daelim Roadwin starter issue

Sounds like the starter silanoid went bad. Take a screw driver and find the starter silanoid witch is uselly by the battery. It has the + cable coming from the battery to it and is bolted to it and then the other bolt has a cable going to the starter. Take the screw driver and touch the 2 bolts at the same time and the starter should turn the motor over. Make shure the bike is not in gear before you do this. Good Luck

Hello I have a 2001 Suzuki bandit 1200. The problem is when I depress the starter switch. I hear the normal spinning of something below near the top of the engine. but the motorcycle wont start. 2...

I had the same thing happen. It's a problem with the starter clutch and how it's attached . A primary bolt is loose. Be sure to have your mechanic use some locktite or really wrench it on there tight--my guy fixed it and then the same thing happened again 10 mos later. But it hasn't happened again in the several years since then. Good luck.
