Question about 1984 Yamaha FJ 1100

1 Answer

Fuel in exhaust and intake box, runaway revs in my 1100

I picked up an 1100 maxim inline 4 that had bad coils. replaced the coils and got it to start. But when it started, it has reved up to full throttle and I have to kill it to stop it. Cable, levers and choke all operating like normal.

Tried it again today and it would run for just a second then die. After a few tries, the exhaust started on fire. There's fuel in the exhaust pipes and dripping out of the intake box at the air cleaner.

These carbs were supposedly rebuilt by a local shop but he never had it running again because the coils were bad.

Looks like I'll have to pull the carbs off and take them apart. Just wondering if anyone knows what I should be looking for? Float, needles? Just need some direction as to what might be wrong.

Thanks so much,
Garrett

I found my gasket inside my petcock was destroyed and so was the o-ring. It looks like a vacuum assist petcock. I'm gonna pick a new one up tomorrow. Do you think it could have been the petcock causing the problem? Or no. I'm scared to start the bike up again cause the last time, the exhaust pipes started on fire and were filled with gas. Had to put them out with an extinguisher. lol

Hey Heinrich,
Sorry.. but it sounds like the problem is still your carburetors.
I would replace the spark plugs AFTER you have a Qualified Professional clean and set your carburetors!! Also have the compression checked on all 4 cylinders....Sometimes low compression will cause a hard starting problem...

Try replacing your spark plug caps and your spark plugs. A bad resister in a cap could be causing the misfire. Purchase NGK brand replacement spark plug caps, they are the same as the original caps but will only cost $5 a piece instead of $30 each. The caps simply unscrew off of the end of the wires.

What about the fuel pump? Do you have a way of testing the fuel pressure? If you can make it stumble while just reving it up in park, then try and spray a little carb cleaner in the throttle body and see what happens! IF it picks back up then you're running out of fuel! Also if the o2 sensor is bad it can trip a rich code! May want to check that also. And make sure it's not getting to much fuel, look at the fuel regualtor in the throttle body if it's leaking at all then it needs to be replaced.

Vacuum leak or fast idle sensor inside throttle body. Also check to make sure throttle cable and cruise control cable is not out of place on the cable roller/pulley on top of intake manifold.

Engine revs to full throttle when starting 1100 Yamaha maxim

More likely too much air - runaway revs is indicative of too lean, not too rich. Regardless, it is your carbs causing the problem - strip them down and look - for peace of mind on an 82 bike, I would throw a rebuild kit at them.
