Question about 1984 Yamaha FJ 1100

1 Answer

Fuel in exhaust and intake box, runaway revs in my 1100

I picked up an 1100 maxim inline 4 that had bad coils. replaced the coils and got it to start. But when it started, it has reved up to full throttle and I have to kill it to stop it. Cable, levers and choke all operating like normal.

Tried it again today and it would run for just a second then die. After a few tries, the exhaust started on fire. There's fuel in the exhaust pipes and dripping out of the intake box at the air cleaner.

These carbs were supposedly rebuilt by a local shop but he never had it running again because the coils were bad.

Looks like I'll have to pull the carbs off and take them apart. Just wondering if anyone knows what I should be looking for? Float, needles? Just need some direction as to what might be wrong.

Thanks so much,
Garrett

I found my gasket inside my petcock was destroyed and so was the o-ring. It looks like a vacuum assist petcock. I'm gonna pick a new one up tomorrow. Do you think it could have been the petcock causing the problem? Or no. I'm scared to start the bike up again cause the last time, the exhaust pipes started on fire and were filled with gas. Had to put them out with an extinguisher. lol

96 jeep cherokee, inline 6 4.0... runs fine... after shut off (5-10 mins) acts like its chokeing out, wont start acts like its missing, no combustion (fuel injected) let sit for 20 mins, fires up fine......

Try the pick-up coil that is under the distributer cap.Remove the cap and rotor button then remove the plate that is under the rotor button.Next you need to take off the relucter wheel that is in the way so you can take out the bolts and remove the pick-up coil.

Engine revs to full throttle when starting 1100 Yamaha maxim

More likely too much air - runaway revs is indicative of too lean, not too rich. Regardless, it is your carbs causing the problem - strip them down and look - for peace of mind on an 82 bike, I would throw a rebuild kit at them.

85 honda shadow 1100 Ignition fuse burns

you have a bad fuel pump. your fuel pump gets turned on by the blue wire that runs from your coil to your spark unit thats why the fuse never blows with the coil disconnected. i had the exact same thing and wasted a lot of time looking for a short that was never there and even tried a new spark unit and fuel cut off relay before i replaced the fuel pump.. fuel pump 65.00 money wasted on other things 350.00 and a lot of time. have your fuel pump tested with a 10 amp inline fuse and if it blows then u will know for sure
