Question about Yamaha V Star Classic Motorcycles

1 Answer

2009 650 Classic: Does not stay in gear, problem getting 1st gear at times. When I bought the bike 1 month ago the problem was there. I returned the bike to Bobby J's in Albuquerque, NM. The service dept. said there was nothing wrong. I drained 300mls of oil (over full) and then I changed the oil, it had gotten better but it is still not right. The bike now has 350 miles on it. The service dept. said if they work on the bike and there is nothing wrong Yamaha will not pay for the work. With the transmission not staying in gear ,this presents a un-safe sitiation when entering a busy intersection. I am riding but always having to check gear position. Thank You, Best Regards: Bill Rockwell

Wish I could come up with a line of B.S. as good as their service department does. You have a slightly bent shift fork. Tell the jerks to fix it. It is a problem, it is not right, and it is covered under warranty. Tell them you really don't want to get creamed when the bike pops out of gear and doesn't want to go back into gear as a cement truck is coming at you. If you let them stall you until the warranty runs out it will cost you around $1400.00 to get it fixed. Contact the Regional manager for Yamaha ASAP. Google "Yamaha Motor Corporation" http://www.yamaha-motor.com/
What I am afraid will happen is that the dealer will do the repair and install a new shift fork then tell you they could not find anything wrong so you now owe them the cash because Yamaha will not stand the repair cost for a non-existent problem. Send Yamaha a certified letter as to your concerns and insist someone other than the dealer inspect the bike to confirm the problem. Keep a copy of the letter and the postal receipt. Is there another dealer in the area?

The diagram below shows how a shift fork moves a slider gear left and right to change gears. A slightly bent shift fork would not let the slider gear "dogs" fully engage into 1st gear.

A “very helpful” rating for this answer? Thanks!

Your alternator/generator must be not working. If it works, it should be able to recharge the battery when your bike is running.

Pops out of 1st gear under acceleration.

Hi Buddy
There is not an easy solution to your gearbox problem,it is general wear on the 'dogs' or 'shift drum'..The only other thing it could be is wear on the 'external shift mechanism'.
I,ve just rebuilt a 1996 vn1500 classic whitch had the same problem so if you need any advise or step by step photos please email me at 'pjuma@hotmail.co.uk'

Bike shuts down when shifting to 1st.

May be possible that clutch is disengaging when shifting to first and/or drive not fully switched into first gear. Your 1st gear light may be lit, but actually isnt in a ready state.
