Head and cylinder head torque for 89 yz490 - Yamaha Motorcycles

SOURCE: 91 kx 250 torque values

Engine Top End:
Auto Decompressor Bolt 104 in·lb
Cylinder Head Cover Bolts 87 in·lb
Cylinder Head Bolts: M10 36 S
M6 104 in·lb S

the S in that means the specified pattern ... just like tightening car tire bolts... please note all that it its INCH lbs....

don't know why it says just 36 for the M10 bolts unless they left out inch lbs

Anything else let me know as i've got a manual for the 250 f... actually i've got a few different ones

First torque value is 58 ft lbs.....then final torgue is 72 ft lbs.

11. Following the tightening sequence shown in
Figure 15, torque the fasteners in 1/2 turn increments and in two stages to the specifications.
Torque the fasteners to 1/2 the given torque, then
torque them to their final specifications:
a. Cylinder head nuts (1-4, Figure 15): 50 N•m
(37 ft.-lb.).
b. Cylinder head cap nut (5, Figure 15): 35 N•m
(26 ft.-lb.).
c. Cylinder head bolts (6 and 7, Figure 15): 20
N•m (15 ft.-lb.).
12. If the cylinder has also been reinstalled, torque
the cylinder bolts (A and B, Figure 23) to 10 N•m
(89 in.-lb.). One of the bolts sits in a recess (B, Fig-
ure 23) in the cylinder block.

  1. Tighten in four steps (refer to illustration in Cylinder Head Installation for tightening sequence):
    • Tighten in sequence to 70-90 Nm (52-66 Lb-Ft)
    • Then back off all bolts 360 degrees
    • Tighten in sequence to 45-55 Nm (34-40 Lb-Ft)
    • Tighten in sequence to 85-99 Nm (63-73 Lb-Ft)
  2. Tighten in two steps
    • 20-30 Nm (15-22 Lb-Ft)
    • 26-32 Nm (20-23 Lb-Ft)
  3. Advance 3/4 to 1 turn after gasket contacts sealing surface or tighten to 13-15 Nm (10-11 Lb-Ft).
  4. Tighten in two steps:
    • 7-15 Nm (6-11 Lb-Ft)
    • 26-38 Nm (20-28 Lb-Ft)
  5. Refer to illustration in the Cylinder Head Installation procedure for tightening sequence.

1989 L4 headbolt sequence:

  • Cylinder head by aligning it with the dowel pins
  • New cylinder head bolts coated with a sealant (such as GM 1052080). Torque the bolts in the proper sequence (1-8) to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Using a torque angle meter turn the bolts 90 degrees in the proper sequence.
  • Left side exhaust manifold. Torque the bolts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
  • Spark plugs. Torque the plugs 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).


  • Right side rear cylinder head:

  • Lower intake manifold. Torque the bolts to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
