SOURCE: Won't crank, brand new battery.

Yes you probably need carb cleaning also its a good measure to drain the oil because if gas over time it does happen that gas will seep past the carb or carbs and into the cylinders and into the crankcase mixing with the oil.

SOURCE: do I check the oil

The bike must be level and not on the side stand. If you look closely, you should see the oil level index marks to the side of the sight glass. Just like the marks on an oil dipstick, as long as the oil level is between the marks, you're OK.

SOURCE: HAVE A 1997 SUZUKI GSXR 600 I CRANK THE BIKE UP

The reason the bike shuts down when you remove the negative cable is because you are removing half the circuit.Go and get yourself a volt meter that will do volts DC.Start the bike up and and with the leads on the appropriate terminals have a friend bring the bike off idle and read the voltage. You should get somewhere between 13 to 14.4 volts.Anything less than this means you are not charging up the battery.Good Luck

SOURCE: I cannot find fuel shut off for a Suzuki volusia

There is no fuel shut off valve,

The fuel line is vacuum operated when the bike is operating.

Do I check the oil level on my Suzuki Volusia while it is on the kick stand or do I check it with the bike being held evenly level?

Kick stand safety shut down, once bike warms up it shuts off if kick stand is down

The bike is supposed to shut down if the kick stand is down. It is a safety feature designed to prevent starting out with the stand down, which can be very inconvenient on your first left turn. If you are saying the bike runs with the stand down when cold, then the switch must be in need of adjustment. Please rate my answer.

The bike starts one day and not the next it is a suzuki vl800

There is a switch down on the kick stand, if the kick stand is in the right position it is not going to let the bike start, letting out on the clutch a little may override that switch, ck this first see if it is loose or out
of its socket, then ck the wires to the switch.

Volusia wont start after lay up

How long of a lay up? Sounds like a dead battery. Put a voltmeter between the positive and negative battery terminals and try to start the bike. If the voltage drops to under 10v when you are trying to start, your battery is faulty.
