If you have not changed the position of the cogs in the ignition housing, put the key in the switch, press in the removal tab under the switch housing and turn the key about 60 degrees to the left (counterclockwise). Insert the switch into the housing and hold the switch so it does not turn then turn the key to the right until the removal tab pops out.

My dad has a 1994 z71 extended cab and the ignition went out in it. I've been told I have to take the steering wheel off but I don't know where to go from there. How do I change the ignition switch...

yes you have to take the steering wheel off, next you will need to take off the round pressure plate that is secured with a C pin around the inner column(behind the plate is a big spring, remove). after that you will need to remove the plastic switches behind the pressure plate. there is a screw on the right that holds in the ignition. after removing the screw the ignition should come right on out. put in the new ignition and make sure to fasten the screw back on. replace the plastic switches and put on the pressure plate (which is very hard to do and remember to fasten it back on with the tiny C clip and make sure that your spring is BEHIND the plate) then bolt back on your steering wheel

Changing out ignition switch

    Remove the Ignition Switch
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket or box wrench. Pull the airbag fuse from the driver's side fuse panel using the fuse removal tool found on the panel. Disable the theft-lock system on the radio.

  2. Remove the instrument cluster by removing the bezel screws with a screwdriver and prying the bezel off with a prying tool or flathead screwdriver.

  3. Remove the two screws holding the ignition switch in place with a screwdriver.

  4. Push the ignition switch about one inch toward the front of the vehicle so that it will clear the mounting bracket. Lift the switch up and out from behind the instrument panel.

  5. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition switch. Put the key in the ignition and turn it the Run position.

  6. Press the spring-loaded pin on the side of the ignition switch with a small screwdriver. Pull the lock cylinder out by the key.

  7. Install the New Ignition Switch
  8. Place the ignition key in the new ignition cylinder and push the cylinder into place in the ignition housing. Turn the key to the off position and remove it.

  9. Connect the electrical wires to the back of the ignition switch.

  10. Put the switch assembly in position in the cluster and install and tighten the two screws with a screwdriver.

  11. Install the instrument cluster bezel and attach the two screws with a screwdriver.

  12. Replace the airbag fuse in the driver's side fuse panel. Connect the negative battery cable with a wrench. Enter the code for the Theft-lock system into the radio.

I have to replace my ignition switch, trying to see how exactly to do it. also whats the best way and safest way putting on wheels. how long of lug bolts do i need for aftermarket wheels do i need spacers...

Remove the steering wheel center portion

if it has a driver airbag you will have to loosen the screws around the back of the steering wheel

if not the hooter potion should just clip off

once off remove the center bolt of the steering (unplug the airbag plugs if applicable)

mark where the steering wheel was located on the shaft so that you dont put it back scew.

remove the steering colum covers that go around the indicator and wiper switches.(there are usually a few scres that go in from underneath

Remove and unplug the wiper and indicator switches (usually just fastens with three very small screw from the front.

now you will see the ignition housing.

At the top side of the steering colum you will see a plate that pulles the ignition housing against the steering colum.

this plate is fastened with "break off bolts" the heads of the bolts break off once fastened as to prevent thieves loosening the ignition lock.

to loosen these screws use a centre punch and a hammer and work them in an anti clockwise direction.

Unplug the ignition switch at the back of the ignition.

please note that if the vehicle has airbags you should not switch on the ignition whilst the air bag is unplugged, this will activate the airbag fault lamp on the instrument cluster.

Install in reverse order.

My windshiled wippers ,heater, radio, and turn lights stoped working

THE TROUBLE IS YOUR IGNITION SWITCH. THIS IS NOT THE IGNITION KEY & LOCK CYLINDER. THEY WORK TOGETHER, BUT THE ELECTRICAL IGNITION SWITCH IS ON THE STEERING COLUMN UNDER THE DASH. YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE LOWER DASH PANEL & LOWER THE STEERING COLUMN. TO GET TO THE IGNITION SWITCH. GET A NEW IGNITION SWITCH,TO SEE WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. THE DIMMER SWITCH FOR THE HEADLIGHTS. IS MOUNTED PIGGY/BACK ON THE IGNITION SWITCH. IF YOU HAVE NEVER DONE THIS IT'S PRETTY TRICKY. THE ROD GOING IN THE DIMMER SWITCH WILL HAVE TO BE SECURED. IF IT FALLS OUT, THE STEERING WHEEL & A LOT OF OTHER NIGHTMARE STUFF WILL HAVE TO BE REMOVED, TO PUT THE ROD BACK IN PLACE. BOTH SWITCHES ARE ADJUSTABLE SO EVERYTHING WILL WORK RIGHT.

I want the step by step instructions to replace the ignition switch.

Hi. I've put together a guide that will help you with the replacement of this ignition switch.

Step1 Disconnect the negative battery cable from the terminal on the battery. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers by unscrewing or unclipping them. Step2 Remove the steering wheelmag-glass_10x10.gif by lifting off the center cover, disconnecting the horn wire and removing the retaining nut and washer. Make a mark on the steering wheel spline and the wheel itself so you can line it back up precisely. Pull the steering wheel straight back to remove from the shaft. Step3 Take off windshield wiper and turn signal switches by pulling them off as you did the steering wheel and disconnect the wiring. Slide the spacer sleeve off of the steering column. Step4 Unscrew the ignition switch mounting screws. Pull out the ignition switch. Disconnect the wiring connector from back of the ignition switch. Simply loosen the tabs and pull it out. Step5 Insert your key into the ignition. Turn the ignition switch to the locked position. Depress the retaining pin with a small screwdriver and turn the key to the Off position to free the cylinder. Once it is free, turn the key to lock position and remove the key and key cylinder. Step6 Install your old key cylinder into the new ignition switch assembly. Make sure the contacts in the cylinder and assembly line up. Reattach wiring to ignition switch, slide it into place, screw in mounting screws and reassemble steering wheel and switches. You have just completed the task.Good job:)

Please rate and god bless.

I need instructions on how to put a locksmart switch ingnition

Removal
  1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove the steering column shroud by removing the four or five self-tapping screws. Remove tilt lever (if so equipped).
  1. Remove instrument panel lower steering column cover.
  1. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.
  1. Rotate ignition key lock cylinder to the RUN position.
  1. Remove the two screws retaining ignition switch.
  1. Disengage the ignition switch from the actuator.
Installation
  1. Adjust the ignition switch by sliding the carrier to the switch RUN position. NOTE: A new replacement switch assembly will be set in the RUN position as received.
  1. Check to ensure that the ignition key lock cylinder is in the RUN position. The RUN position is achieved by rotating the key lock cylinder approximately 90 degrees from the LOCK position.
  1. Install the ignition switch into the actuator. It may be necessary to move the switch slightly back and forth to align the switch mounting holes with the column lock housing threaded holes.
  1. Install retaining screws. Tighten to 5.6-7.9 Nm (50-69 lb-in).
  1. Connect electrical connector to ignition switch.
  1. Connect battery ground cable. Check ignition switch for proper function, including START and ACC positions. Also, make certain that the column is locked in the LOCK position.
  1. Install instrument panel lower steering column cover.
  1. Install the steering column trim shrouds and tilt lever (if so equipped).
