Question about 1993 Yamaha XV 535 Virago DX

Won't idle without choke

I have a 93 yamaha 535 virago that had a dead battery. I changed the battery and he bike rode fine. About a week later, the bike would not run without the choke. I sprayed the tank and carb air intakes with cleaner but still no change. I've also drained the tank a few times thinking it was bad gas. I checked the rubber carb mounts and vacuum lines by spraying carb cleaner on them but no leaks. I drained the carbs and the gas looked clean. Any ideas??..I'm running out of summer, please help!

I'd like to thank all those that replied to my problem. I tried to tighten my throttle cable as well as adjust the idle screw but no change. I am in the process of taking out the carbs but I'm not sure where I can find a good rebuilding kit. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd also like to know which parts of the carb need or should be rebuilt when I take it all apart. Thanks again!

A stretched gas throttle cable will make it idle slower. Adjust the cable tighter. OR A lot of years of gas and moisture has taken its toll on the inside of the carbs. They need completely taken down and cleaned properly. ("Zep" Dip) Then set back to idle correctly.

Sounds like a blocked idle jet. You may not need a kit but would not hurt. What you may need is to get the jets cleaned. if you have a jet cleaning tool you can do it yourself. While tha carbies are apart clean them thoroughly as residues build up

The pilot jet controls the air/gas fuel mix at idle . If the jet gets plugged up not enough gas gets to the emgine at idle. You will need to remove the carbs and float bowls and clean them, paying special attention to the pilot valve. Count the number of turns to remove the pilot screw and replace the same number of turns then turn counter clockwise 1/2 turn.

A “very helpful” rating for this answer? Thanks!
