Go to this site and you can download a free PDF service manual. www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp Almost all of the manuals are in English but some are not. There is no way to be sure without doing the download. You can always delete it if in a foreign language. You didn't say what year your bike was but the site has them for multiple years. Just get as close as you can and you will be fine since the proceedures don't change.

check the pints for the timing marks are correct. Do a compression test to see if the valves are bent. It is an interference engine which means that if you moved the cams or crank to line up the timing marks with the cam in position you have bent the valves. If you have done it right then check the firing order
bent push rods could have been caused when the chain broke and not from the chain been replaced wrong or the timing out.
if the engine was running when the chain broke the cam would have stopped leaving all the valves in the same positon as the mometum of the fly wheel continued to turn the pistons in the cylendars could hav come up and hitting the valves and bending the push rods. and or damaging the cylendar head.
recommend removing the head and have it checked for damage, as well as replacing the bent push rods, and cylendar gaskit. once the head is checked and the valves are seated well. then replace and follow instructions in the set up for the pistons and cam prior to replacing the chain and setting the timing.
you replaced the lifters? why? the engine is out of time, the cam position determines if its on compression stroke or not. you may have bent valves, if not you are lucky. the cams have pins to hold them in time and then the chain is installed with crank on #1 tdc (keyway up). if all is lined up correctly and it doesnt have compression, you have bent the valves. Water pump replacement is not a job for a DIY.
you will need to open the engine up if you can not turn the cam fully. something has been bent or broken or else it will turn. by breaking your timing belt was it shredded? if so you do have internal damage
That motor has a timing chain, not a timing belt. Replacing it requires removing the water pump, dropping the oil pan, removing the balancer and timing cover. Rotate the crank so the dots on the cam gear and crank gear line up at the 6 and 12 o clock positions respectively. Unbolt the cam gear and remove it and the chain. If you need to remove the crank gear you can use a three jaw puller or something similar to pull it off. Reinstall the crank gear lining up the gear with the keyway on the crank and press it on with the appropriate tool. Install the cam gear with the chain and make sure dots line up again. It may be necessary to remove the valve covers and rocker arms as well to rotate the cam shaft if need be.
It definately sounds as though you've got your cam gear set 180 degrees off.When your timing is at top dead center your crankshaft will be at TDC on the guage, the cam gear will have both of the lobes at 10:00 and 2:00 away from the surface of the valve they serve on the number one cylinder. This can only be see if the valve cover is removed, which at this point I'm sure it is. Thank you, Dana
If the chain broke at highway speed then you have probably bent valves too. Does the motor spin fast? If it sounds different cranking then it may have bent valves. You can do a compression test to find out for sure. Good Luck
I think it's an interference engine but you can check quite easily at this point if the valves are bent. Pull all the spark plugs out, turn the crank so that all the pistons are 1/2 way down their bore, get a piece of fuel line that is just the right size to thread into the plug holes or a special fitting for this purpose, and blow into each cylinder after you have turned the cams in succession so that the valves should be closed at the hole you are blowing into. If a valve is bent, you won't have any trouble blowing into the cylinder. If it's good, you won't be able to blow very well at all.

Sorry to bear bad news but as far as I know Gm engines are NOT safe i.e. the valve miss pistons. It sometimes isn't too severe if very low rev's i.e. tickover, usually 2 or 3 exhuaust and same inlet. Let's hope no seats.
