2001 Honda - New Catalytics & O2 sensors -- new 0420/1739/1456

Subject: 2001 Honda Odyssey bought used with engine light on (without having passed emissions check) with about 98K miles. After having catalytic converters replaced the engine light returned. Had both O2 sensors replaced and engine light was extinguished for one day then it returned. Previous code was P0420 (Emission system below efficiency). Current codes include P0420 plus P1739 (Transmission System problem), and P1456 (Fuel System possible leak). Any thoughts?

I would send the car for a smoke test for the emissions leak...Find out where the leak is comming from..Repair it..Reset the codes, then do a drive cycle and see what happens...

I recently bought a 2000 Honda Odyssey and the engine check light is on. I took it to AutoZone and the codes came back as P0136 and P0138. It's indicating the downstream O2 sensor. Today I jacked up...

Your car uses heated oxygen sensors. Once the key is turned on the heating element in the sensor will start heating up. If you leave the key OFF overnight and the sensor is warmer than the surrounding metal, then that would indicate a problem. Running the engine even for a just a minute will heat the exhaust system and the sensor quickly.

Oxygen sensors can maintain their "new" look for a long time. I have romved sensors that are years old and look new on the oustide but have failed. Looking new or old is not a good indication of failure.

I went to the Honda dealership with my 2006 Honda Odyssey for the VSA light on. They told me its a YAW Sensor and they want $700.00 to fix it. Honda tells me ther eis no recall for this problem. Is there a...

I dont see any bulletins on the sensor having issues. the yaw sensor also referred to as roll rate sensor is located under the drivers seat. an option for you might be to replace sensor yourself and just have dealer perform the setup procedure.to replace you will need to remove the drivers seat to gain access and be very careful not to drop new sensor. might get lucky and install and light goes off with no further action, but if not most dealers will charge an hour labor to program/setup

There is are upstream and downstream O2 sensors. 1 or 2 (upstream) before the catalytic converter which sends signals for closed loop fuel control and OBD II monitoring, and 1 (downstream) after the catalytic converter, which is used to monitor the catalytic converter operation. The PCM monitors the signal from each O2 sensor.

P0420 error code honda odyssey

You don't necessarily need a new converter. I had this code on my 2006 Odyssey at around 150,000 miles for both the front and rear converter and only needed new downstream O2 sensors ($40 for the back, $60 for the front). This is why my car never sees the inside of a dealership shop, they're happy to replace your converter for >$1000 without even looking at the problem. A little troubleshooting goes a long way here. I grabbed an engine code reader from the local auto parts store and read the O2 sensors with the engine running and noticed the voltages on them were erratic, and they shouldn't be. Mine were reading ~ 0.8 volts, then would jump down to < 0.1 volts for a couple readings, then back up to 0.8. The downstream sensor readings should be fairly stable.
