...if all 3 lights are on...
This is a laser mirror motor problem.
If you are a little bit technician then...
Remove all cables, open front panel, remove the cartridge, remove the 2 screws on top and 3 on back side, remove a white latch from underside left (or right i don't remember ).
With a small screwdriver release 4 tabs that hold back cower and remove it.
Pull a little bit on under front edges for releasing two little tabs and remove the whole cover by lifting it..
Now you can see the laser scanner unit with a yellow label on it.
Remove the screw, release the tabs an remove laser cover after removing one or two little cables over it.
You can see now a rotating square mirror fixed over a little disc, secured with a little plastic black tab.
DO NOT TOUCH THE MIRROR WITH BARE HANDS or you will make it dirty .
Rotate the black tab to release the disc, remove the mirror with a clean cloth, and put a small drop of synthetic oil on its rod... that's all.
Hope you can do it.

Thanks, Finge! It worked! But what you call "a rotating square mirror" is more like a shiny nut with a screw that goes through the center, that screw being what you call "its rod." Just adding a bit of description. Great help. Thanks again!

There is a loud "whining"

Power steering pumps whine when they are low on fluid, or if they are goin bad. Serpentine belts also whine in cold weather or when they are goin bad. Tru spraying just a little WD40 on the belts when its running, if it goes away, you should be thinking about a new belt. If nothing changes, check the power steering fluid, if its full, take to a mechanic

Scanner stops partway along path, motor whines

There is an obstacle in the scanner path, or the scanning head guides got bent (unlikely). There could also be something in the rubber drive belt driving the scanning head gears. Try looking inside with a light and check for scratches on the guide. Unfortunately, to fix the problem you'll have to either send the scanner to maintenance, or to open it yourself (voiding the warranty).
