There is a pipe at the rear of the of the oil run that is connected to the frame. unfasten it on the frame and the oil will drain. There are no plugs at the bottom of the Sportsters.

How to drain engine crankcase oil 2004 1200 sportster

Run the bike to get it to normal operating temperature. Put an thin oil pan on the ground under the center of the engine. Look for the little rubber hose coming from the bottom of the bike with a plastic plug in it and held in the hose with a clamp. Loosen the clamp and save to reuse if it is the screw type. Then pull the plug out and open up the oil fill cap on right side by the seat.

Hi Anonymous, it runs from the bottom of the oil tank to a clmp on the frame, remove it and the worm clamp that holds the plug and drain away, make sure you do these just after a ride so oil is nice and hot. Have nice day.

Oil change xl 1200

Warm engine up to operating temp. Remove plug in bottom of oil tank. Be ready the oil comes out fast and is difficult to catch. Allow to drip into catch container while you remove
oil filter and install new one. Reinstall tank drain plug and fill with oil. Start but do not tach up allow oil pressure to come up. Shut it down and check oil again.
Good Luck and Ride Safe O yes do check for leaks

Does an 01 sportster 1200 have an oil bath. clutch. This persons tried to change his own oil pulled two different plugs one oil was clean one was was not. It has a hard time shifting now

Yes it does. It should take about a quart of oil in the primary. Some primary covers have an oil level indicator hole at the very back of the primary just bit above the lowest point. The drain plug is underneath the primary. If you have an "oil level plug", remove it and add oil until it comes out of the hole. If you can't find a level hole, drain the primary and refill with one quart of oil
