Take the seat off so you can get a firm grip on the cap.  turn counter clockwise. it will come out!  before returning cap, put some vasoline on the o ring, that seems to make it a "little" easier.  WARNING! do not get to rough with the pop up feature...it breaks easily and costs 68 bucks for a new one if you can't machine your own parts to repair it.

I found it really difficult to screw the Harley oil cap fully back & I didn't want to break the cap! It looked wrong riding around with it not flush with the side panel & it would pop up (but not leak!)
I found an elastic band & wrapped it round the cap a couple of times, when it was up & with the seat on, it was enough to get it turned the amount it needed! Then pushed it in, all sorted.
I hope this helps you. Remember Loud pipes save lives! Chris, in the UK.

No threads on my 97'. have to continue to wiggle and pull then it pops out but not without quite a bit of effort.

Tecumseh vector 5.5 hp Arens mower smokes from under the oil dip tube / filler cap and has a fair amount of pressure behind it. 30 W Oil level is correct. Exhaust is clear and engine runs fine until...

Set the mower on level ground and check the oil level, Two much oil will cause it to smoke while on inclines. If oil is being pushed out of the oil fill tube then you are getting positive pressure built up in the crankcase instead of negitive pressure. This will most likely be caused by a blown head gasket. George

Why does My oil cap keep popping off when I rab my 883 sportster up

Hi Anonymous, the engine breather system on Harley Davidsons has NEVER been famous for being a trouble free zone. Oil tank dip stick launches happen far to often than they should in my humble opinion. As engine sizes get bigger so does the volume of air created by the piston downstroke, and for the most part the diameter of the breathing excape route stays the same. The usual cause of dipstick launch is a worn out rubber seal that requires no effort to remove or install, a new rubber seal requires some effort to push it in the oil tank and some effort to remove it. Next in line is an oil tank the is over filled. Try a new dipstick and running your oil level half way between the add and full mark. Good luck

Excess motor oil that blew out the oil cap ,when you've parked for a long time the oil in the tank will drop down in the crankcase, then when you start the motor it will go back in the oil tank and then overflow the oil level...You must have to drain the oil tank again and refill it at the correct oil level....

Checked the oil level on my 2003 hugger, replaced the cap/dipstick and started the engine. The cap/dipstick blew off the tank, followed by about a pint of oil. After cleaning up and refitting the cap,...

Umm, did you add oil when it was cold? I would never suggest adding cold. Harleys are a dry sump system and oil can fill the crankcase overnight and give the illusion you are low, thus overfilled when you add and start! heh
The only models not affected by this is oilpan FLH's, all Dyna's, and VRod's. *Any* motorcycle with a oil tank above the crankcase and a pump in between can do this. Just be glad you crankcase doesn't vent to ground, it would have been an even bigger mess. *note* in rare instances this (oil cap popping out) can be caused by excessive crank case pressure IE: cracked ring. cylinder leakdown test would answer this. Doubt an 03 whould have a cracked ring.

Cant fit oil cap back on properly

Those are tricky but all it takes is to push the cap down and screww it in, then firmly grasp the cap and turn it till it lines up flush to where its supposed to sit.

The bike has a wet clutch, it uses the engine oil to lubricate the motor, transmission, and cool the clutch.
