Question about 2000 Harley Davidson FLHT Electra Glide Standard
First thing to check is the battery cables. Positive AND negative.
Corrosion could lead to the intermittent failures you are experiencing.
Have you checked the voltage? Running and not running? With a Digital Multimeter?
Off - the battery should read 8.5-12VDC
Running - the battery should read 14VDC +/- .5V
if the battery is under 8V, the accessories will power on - but there will be insufficient voltage to engage the starter solenoid.
Anything out of this spec means the alternator or battery is faulty.
Have them LOAD tested to be sure they are operating properly.
Next area you should be looking at is the Throttle Position Sensor. If it is faulty and goes out of range - there will be a shutdown. Does it Idle properly? Will it sit all day at idle - but when you use the throttle it cuts out - or does it cut out under both conditions??
If you have a kickstand sensor installed - this could have failed, giving the bike a signal the stand is down, and shutting down. Jumper it and try again.
Lastly - if the ECM has failed - it will need to be replaced. The Heat up condition may be a telltale sign that there is a cold solder joint inside - that once heated separates from the main board, and then there is no contact. Once it cools down and the connection is re-made - it starts up - just to fail again after the ECM cools.
These are a few options... looks like you have your work cut out for you!!
