Fuel line issues on Yamaha Timber Wolf ATV

I’m trying to get a friend’s Yamaha Timber Wolf ATV(year unknown) running. I was able to get it started but it won’t idle and runs rough off idle. I noticed a plastic hose that was partially filled with gas attached to the bottom of the Mikuni (model YM) carb bowl that was routed and dead-ended above the cylinder head. I believe the dead-ended, or open end of the hose should be connected to something as the end is somewhat flared (like at one time it was connected to a fitting nipple), plus, no manufacture would ever route an open ended hose containing gas above a hot cylinder head!!! All this said, I can’t find anything that this hose could be connected too, and the Mikuni web-site pdf manual for YM carbs shows a plug on the bottom of the float bowl instead of the nipple fitting/hose that is on the ATV in question……. Any help would be appreciated!!!

Thanks for the info on the hose. For what its worth, here's what the problem was; the O-ring on the start valve(choke)was dry and caused the valve to stick off it's seat. Consequently the mixture was always too rich. A drop of 3-in-1 oil in the valve bore freed it up and it's been running great since. As a side note, and it should come as no surprize, there was a lot of gas in the oil! Thanks again!!!

That was an atmospheric vent you found that should not have gas in it. If it does, the carb has over flowed. It probably needs to be cleaned with special attention paid to the needle valve and float assemblies. It is routed up high to prevent water and debris from entering it and clogging it up. It should have holes for it to pass through on the snorkel coming out of the air box behind the gas tank under the seat.

That hose is just a drain for when you loosen up the screw on the bottom side of the float bowl, be sure that the carb is cleaned very well, make sure you have good compression and spark. ( blue spark ). only need those three things for it to run.

I have a 96 timber wolf 250. It will jump across silinoid and fire up. Neutral light not coming on. I have checked fuses and began replacing parts starting with the silinoid and ignition switch. Why?

Hi Anonymous, you may have a faulty nuetral sensor or bulb and I am sorry you can't find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Yamaha but despair not for a mere $10 you can download another one. Hi I am doing a simpile head & cylinder inspection. Just bought the bike smoking bad. The cylinder & piston are damaged. I will be replacing piston rings & doing a bore job to match new piston....

The diagram below should work for you. Put the piston on TDC. the OHC cam gear will have a single mark or may have two marks, see below. Be certain the front side of the chain is taut when mounting the gear. The cam chain tensioner keeps the back side taut.
