Question about 2002 Buell Blast

3 Answers

2002 buell blast is running rough - missing - backfiring

This bike has been to the Harley Davidson shop 3 times. This is the stuff they said they did.

Replaced Manifold coupler
Fuel flushed
Carburetor cleaned & adjusted
Timing adjusted
New battery
Automatic enricher replaced
Ignition module replaced
Spark plug & spark plug wire replaced

And after all that the bike still
Misses
Backfires
Runs rough

Runs better once warm but still will backfire now and then. And has die on me a few time while I was on the freeway.

what should i do to give a better description so someone can help me find the problem with this bike.

  • mike_krueger Jul 07, 2009

The lights stay on when the bike dies.

What results do you hope for here? Obviously you're going to go back to the shop and ask for a refund, then take the bike to a different shop and have them fix it. No one can diagnose your problem from your description.

IT'S NORMAL!!! MINE DOES THE SAME THING! NEEDS MORE AIRFLOW--FIGURE OUT HOW TO ACCOMPLISH THIS, POST IT WHEN IT WORKS SO I CAN DO IT TOO, LOL! IF I GET IT FIRST, I'LL LET YA KNOW-JUST KEEP YOUR EARS TURNED ON THE FREEWAYS SO YOUR HAND KEEPS YOUR IDLE UP. GOOD LUCK!!

Wow, my 2002 blast is doing the same thing, or at least it was untill it blew a hole through the exhaust and quit running all together. Time for a sportster.

It sounds like that should of cured the problem however if they didn't adjust the tps after they replaced the enhicher then that could be the problem also remind them to adjust after two minutes so enricher has shut off

Hard to say w/ seeing it; it does sound as if they replaced everything w/o really finding the problem first; try better fuel and clean petcock; when dies is it electrical( all lights out) or does it sputter and choke off? sorry; I know it can be frustrating check all wiring under seat looking for loose or broken connectors or ground wires

check coil wiring/connection; double check spark plug/ gap; check vacuum hoses for leaks; this is really tricky; intermittent "ghosts" are hard enough to diagnose w/ the bike on a lift let alone in a "chat room". how does it start? Ie:run it over and starts right up? Just thought of this- check all your safety devices: they put clutch interlock/ kickstand etc on the blasts; if it is dying while riding possibly a safety switch is malfunctioning somehow; I'm just guessing but right now your problem is not common. I was asking about lighting / choking when it dies to figure if it was electrical or fuel related. how many miles on it and hard or "nice"; You have me intrigued and since you are actually posting responses I will keep racking my brain; my wife has an 03 blast in the garage and I'm about to tear that down to duplicate your headaches so any info is helpful to diagnose problem; even though it may seem mundane or irrelevant to you. Good luck and I'll talk to you later...T

alright, I've got a few more questions to clarify your problems...Is it a California model? when the bike stalls on the highway, if you crack the gas cap does it sound like air rushing in? have you investigated air intake leaks? what exactly did they do to your carb(rebuild, reset float level, change jets or what)? where was work done?- a hd dealership w/ Buell support or some m/c shop that "fixes" everything? anybody can change parts; a real tech finds and remedies problems. ...T

The idle was high like the choke was on. Went to 2 shops, intake seals put in and idle adjusted. Now, when I stop sometimes no idle - restart bike.

Hi Richard, It might be something as simple as adjusting you idle up a little so it's between 900 and 1000 RPM'S. Or your air fuel mixture screw is to lean and needs to be adjusted out 1/2 to 3/4 turn. Your float level could be too low. You could have blocked air passages in the carb body itself. I would take it back to the guys you paid good money to and voice your concerns respectfully but firmly as well; If they are reputable people they should accomodate you free of charge. Good luck

Why does a 2002 buell blast backfire through the carb when given throttle?

Hi, Anonymous popping on deceleration is usually caused by an air leak in the exhaust system and is generally located where black carbon soot is seen as a flashing build up from any joint connection. This condition can easily be remedied by removing and cleaning both joint pieces and reassembling with high temp silicone and the correct torque applied to the exhaust clamps where present. Coughing is usually caused by an air leak in the intake system and will generally have the same telltale signs of location by a wet or damp buildup of oil/gas seepage at the intake manifold to cylinder head or carburetor connection and in rare instances a worn throttle plate shaft and or seals. Spitting is usually caused by a faulty accelerator pump and or nozzle, or the float bowl needle and seat leaking and overflowing through the main jet mixing well nozzle, or the air-fuel mixture screw set to lean. Remove the carburetor on a 2005 harley davidson 883 sportster

REMOVAL

1WARNING

Turn the fuel supply valve to OFF and then remove the air cleaner and backplate, cut the clamp and disconnect the fuel hose from the fuel inlet fitting, detach the enrichener knob assembly from its bracket between the cylinder heads, disconnect the throttle cables from the carburetor, disconnect the fuel overflow/drain hose from the fuel overflow fitting, remove the enrichener cable assembly, enrichener valve and spring. (on California models only, disconnect the canister purge hose from the fitting on the carburetor body), remove the fuel tank and pull the carburetor free of the intake manifold. If removing the intake manifold, remove the four manifold mounting screws, remove the intake manifold, the seal ring, the mounting flanges and the two intake manifold seals. If removing the MAP sensor remove its screw, the MAP sensor clip and the MAP sensor itself.

How do i check the gear oil level

Simple - get a drain pan. Pull the drain plug on the left side of the bike under the shifter and let everything out. Check what is there. Put the plug back in and open the clutch inspection cover behind the LEFT foot pedal. POUR IN A QUART OF NEW HARLEY DAVIDSON PRIMARY OIL. YES, IT TAKES A SPECIAL OIL. Don't put the old stuff back in.
