Get your self a manual, there are plenty available, either freebie (hunt around) or pay eg Ebay. But I think your problem is beyond the scope of the home mechanic and with require the need of an expert and a well equiped workshop.

This is the way PROFESSIONAL mechanics do a chain/sprocket check and drive chain alignment and tension.. Proper chain tension is very important to the life of your chain and sprockets and performance of your bike. First, you need to check to see if the chain/sprockets need replacing. (Chain and sprockets are ALWAYS replaced as a set (-all-3)..if you replace a chain on worn sprockets.. the chain will stretch out QUICK.. and if you put new sprockets with a worn chain.. the sprockets will be worn out QUICK too!!) ...To do this..the bike needs to be on the center stand or bike stand...NOT on the side stand...
...now...--remove the chain guard-- next..Sprocket check time - take one hand and squeeze the chain (grab the chain above and below the swingarm) at the point between the axle and the swingarm bolt.. as hard as possible. to take all the slack out of the chain and put the tension completely around the back sprocket.. while you are squeezing the chain as hard and tight as possible.. - with your other hand - try to lift/pull the chain off the rear sprocket.. IF you can pull the chain off enough to see if there is a .200" or 5mm max. gap between the chain and sprocket - under the chain... or MORE THAN A HALF a tooth groove under the chain..or the chain pulls up more than two teeth...OR the teeth on either sprocket are "pointed thin" or rounded inside....you need to replace the chain/sprockets.
...ONCE you are sure the chain/sprockets are good..its time to CORRECTLY align and adjust the chain tension. Loosen the axle nut.. DO NOT remove it.. now - tap it gently to make sure its loose...loose the chain adjuster nuts.. back them off a good bit, but do not remove them...you may,also need to loose the rear brake caliper mounts ..you should be able to move the rear wheel forward and backward with your hand.(this is to assure you have sufficient "looseness" to make the proper adjustment...NOW - pull the rear tire backwards until it stops.. - run the adjuster nut(s) until they are just snug..ALIGNMENT - This is CRITICAL - (did you remove the chain guard yet?) - do that now. You must be able to see down the entire length of the chain (above the swingarm)..The chain MUST RUN IN A STRAIGHT LINE!! .. The little marks on the swingarm are just "guides".. never use them as perfect.. the only way to assure CORRECT ALIGNMENT is a visual check of the chain to make sure its in a straight line!!!! - ...ANY bend, crook, or mis-alignment will cause premature wear and tear, and make it harder for your engine to make it turn. - Now - Rotate the wheel and find the tightest point of the chain... there is one, and its normal... LEAVE the tight point located between the two sprockets on the top of the swingarm. This is where you will "feel" for the correct tension.
The biggest thing most people miss when adjusting the tension is having the AXEL/NUT and the SWINGARM PIVOT SHAFT and the COUNTERSHAFT C/L (front sprocket shaft) IN A STRAIGHT LINE - ALL THREE ARE ON THE SAME PLANE!!!!!
. NOW, You may have to get a buddy to help pull the swing arm up.. (I use a tie down strap through the rear wheel and over the seat pulled tight enough to make AND KEEP the STRAIGHT LINE!!)
..Once you have established the straight line - --- - --- - and MADE SURE the chain is RUNNING STRAIGHT on both sprockets.. NOW _ its time to adjust the tension. There WILL be a tightest and loosest point of the chain..(normal).. you MUST adjust the tension using the TIGHTEST point of the chain....set the tension so you can move the chain up and down (total movement) about 1 3/8 inch to a max of 2 inches!! Once you have established the chain is straight and the tension is correct, its time to TIGHTEN EVERYTHING in order... start with snugging the axle nut.. then snug the adjuster nuts more..-- DOUBLE CHECK you chain alignment.. now - tighten the axle - TIGHT!!... tighten the adjuster nuts..lock down the lock nuts.. tighten the caliper.. TRIPLE CHECK the alignment... double check the tension...double check all the nuts... install the chain guard... REMOVE whatever you use the keep the straight line straight..

TRIPLE CHECK ALL NUTS!!! NOW ROTATE THE REAR WHEEL AND CHECK FOR BINDING AND MAKE SURE THE CHAIN IS WORKING CORRECTLY AND NOT TOO LOOSE..
KNOW you have done a job correctly!! (I am a factory trained mechanic, race engine builder, port work guy, race tuner.)..

How loose can the valve timing chains be and still run?


There is a tensioner and being loose is not as bad as wear, you might notice some backfire noise when the wear gets excessive.

Change chain


Loosen and remove bar lock nuts and cover. screw tensioning screw to loosest point. wrap chain onto teeth of drive sprocket, then within grooves on bar. Be certain cutting edges are facing forward. Look at chain before removing. set bar with new chain to ensure the tension pin aligns with bar tensioning hole. Replace cover set nuts loosely. Tighten chain to about 1/4" out of groove when pulled on (wear gloves). Tighten nuts, spin chain to see it moves freely but does not hang free og bar groove. re-tension as necessary. Happy cutting!

if the car keeps jumping 2 or 3 teeth on the timing, it's possible that you need a new timing chain/belt and tensioner.

On 2002 ford explorer,4.6-v-8, when i was changing timing chain guides and adjusters the chains jumped teeth on the crankshaft. The manual says the left camshaft timing mark should be approx. @ 11:oo & the...


Look for some Youtube videos on this repair. If I remember correctly the links on this chain have different color metal for the spots that the cam tooth goes against. When each side is in the proper tooth the right and left colored links will be on the cam mark and the crank mark should be on the timing TDC mark. Sounds like the slack you describe is wrong and a tooth is off because the tensioner is allowing slack.. You need to slip a tooth one way or the other until the tensioner has room to be in a neutral position.

Both the 2.2 and the 2.4 engines use a chain, not a belt.
A chain could still be faulty, but I doubt it would jump teeth unless the tensioner failed to keep it tight.

Not common unless the car has not been maintained. Without regular oil changes, the chain eventually stretches, the sprockets wear, and then the chain may jump a tooth. It is more common with overhead cams, because the chains are much longer and rely on tensioners that wear out.

What happens when ur car jumps timing and what causes it?


A car with a timing belt will jump time for several reasons, the belt dries out and the teeth strip off the belt, the tensioner or guide wear and fail, the belt can stretch over the years causing it to jump the sprockets. A car with a timing chain can jump because many were made with cam gears that had plastic teeth and they wore out, or the gear was made out of a casting that wore out, or the chain stretched replacement cam gears were usually made out of steel. Timing chain replacement


Timing Chain and Gears REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 1.9L Engine NOTE: The following procedure requires the use of the puller tool No. J-25031 or equivalent, and timing sprocket installation tool No. J-26587 or equivalent.
  1. Remove the timing (front) cover from the engine.
  2. Lock the shoe on the automatic adjuster in fully retracted position by depressing the adjuster lock lever. NOTE: To remove the timing chain, it may be necessary to remove the camshaft sprocket. Before removing the timing chain, be sure to align the timing marks.
  3. Remove timing chain from crankshaft sprocket.
  4. Check the timing sprockets for wear or damage. If crankshaft sprocket must be replaced, remove the sprocket and the pinion gear from crankshaft using the puller tool No. J-25031 or equivalent.
  5. Check timing chain for wear or damage; replace as necessary. Measure distance "L'' (40 links) with the chain stretched with a pull of approximately 22 lbs. (98N). Standard "L'' value is 15 in. (381mm); replace chain if "L'' is greater than 15.16 in. (385mm).
  6. Remove the automatic chain adjuster-to-engine bolt and the adjuster.
  7. To check the operation of the automatic chain adjuster, push the shoe inwards, if it becomes locked, the adjuster is working properly. The adjuster assembly must be replaced if rack teeth are found to be worn excessively.
  8. To remove the chain tensioner, remove the "E'' clip and the tensioner. Check the tensioner for wear or damage; if necessary, replace it. Fig. 1: Timing chain guide and tensioner - 1.9L engine 85383285.gif

  9. Inspect the tensioner pin for wear or damage. If replacement is necessary, remove the pin from the cylinder block using a pair of locking pliers. Lubricate the NEW pin tensioner with clean engine oil. Start the pin into block, then place the tensioner over the appropriate pin. Position the E-clip onto the pin, then (using a hammer) tap it into the block until clip just clears tensioner. Check the tensioner and adjuster for freedom of rotation on the pins.
  10. Inspect the guide for wear or damage and plugged lower oil jet. If replacement or cleaning is necessary, remove the guide bolts, the guide and the oil jet. Install a new guide and upper attaching bolt. Install the lower oil jet and bolt, so that the oil port is pointed toward crankshaft.   11. Install the timing sprocket and the pinion gear (groove-side toward the front cover). Align the key groove with crankshaft key, then drive it into position using installation tool No. J-26587 or equivalent.
  12. Turn the crankshaft so that key is turned toward the cylinder head-side (No. 1 and No. 4 pistons at TDC).
  13. Install the timing chain, align the timing chain mark plate with the mark on the crankshaft timing sprocket. The side of the chain with the mark plate is on the front-side and the side of chain with the most links between mark plates is on the chain guide-side. Keep the timing chain engaged with the camshaft timing sprocket until the camshaft timing sprocket is installed on the camshaft.
  14. Install the camshaft timing sprocket so that it's marked-side faces forward and it's triangular mark aligns with the chain mark plate.
  15. Install the automatic chain adjuster.
  16. Release the lock by depressing the shoe on adjuster by hand, and check to make certain the chain is properly tensioned when the lock is released.
  17. Install the timing cover assembly.

What is the right way to time a 4cyl Chevy S-10 timing chain


1998-2003 To Remove:
  1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Crankshaft pulley and hub
    • Drive belt tensioner gm_truck_s10_tcbolts.gif

    • Timing chain cover bolts gm_truck_s10_tc.gif

    • Timing chain cover and gasket
  2. Install a bolt in the end of the crankshaft CAUTION
    Do not install the crankshaft balancer bolt or a bolt longer than 1 inch or damage to the crankshaft threaded hole will result.
  3. Rotate crankshaft until the number 1 piston is at Top Dead Center of compression stroke.
  4. Make sure that the alignment marks are aligned with the tabs on the timing chain tensioner. gm-03-22-611.gif

  5. Measure distance between hole in bracket and unworn surface of timing chain tensioner shoe. NOTE: If distance between the hole and unworn surface of timing chain tensioner is greater than 0.314 in (8 mm), replace tensioner, timing chain and sprockets.
  6. Remove timing chain tensioner bolts.
  7. Remove the timing chain, timing chain tensioner and camshaft sprocket at the same time.
  8. Remove the crankshaft sprocket using special tool J 22888-20A or equivalent.
  9. Remove crankshaft sprocket alignment key.

NOTE: If any camshaft components are being replaced to correct a noise problem, all camshaft drive components must be replaced.
To Install:
  1. Install the crankshaft sprocket alignment key.
  2. Install the crankshaft sprocket using special tool J 5590 or equivalent. gm-03-22-613.gif

  3. Compress the timing chain tensioner spring and insert a pin into the tensioner hole to retain the tensioner shoe.
  4. Install timing chain and timing chain tensioner (do not tighten tension bolts).
  5. Align the crankshaft and camshaft timing marks with the tab on the timing chain tensioner.
  6. Tighten the timing chain tensioner bolts.
    • Torque to: 18 ft lbs (24 Nm)
  7. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt.
    • Torque to: 96 ft lbs (130 Nm)
  8. Remove pin from timing chain tensioner hole.
  9. Remove bolt from end of crankshaft. CAUTION
    Inspect the timing chain cover for warping or damage. Replace if needed.
  10. Clean all timing chain cover mating surfaces.
  11. Install or connect the following:
    • Timing chain cover to the engine block
      1. Ensure that the gasket is installed properly in the groove in the timing chain cover
    • Timing chain cover and make sure it fully seated on the alignment dowel pins
    • Timing chain cover bolts
      1. Torque to: 97 inch lbs (11 Nm)
    • Drive belt tensioner
    • Crankshaft damper hub and the crankshaft pulley
