Choke cable is jammed on my 1986 Goldwing - 1985 Honda GL 1200 Interstate Gold Wing

Thanks for the intell...my problem seems to be that I can't see where the end of the cable connects to the choke machanism under the carbs. I was hoping NOT to have to take the carbs out to get to the end of the cable.

Thanks, again, for the reply. I currently have the 'pod' removed, the air cleaner removed, the lowers (both sides) removed plus whatever else seemed to be in the way. Even with an inspection mirror, I am having difficulties identifyinf the exact connection between the end of the cable and the choke linkage. I, too, blew up the pics on the Babbit site (great site...thanks!), but to no avail. I have the choke control removed at the handlebars, as well. I am also in possession of a genuine Honda Servie Manual. I guess that after twenty-three years in service, I can't complain about the problem with the choke...it would seem from the lack of information in the manual, it isn't a prevelant problem. I do have some graphite lube...will give that a try.

You can get a new cable at Babbit's. Go to the HANDLE SWITCH tab
SKU: 17950-MG9-000
CABLE, CHOKE (Honda Code 1524305) @ $21.94

Go to the site below where you can see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part, the part is not in stock. www.babbittsonline.com/pages/parts/viewbybrandand/parts.aspx

I don't get paid for my answers but I do take pride in them, I just try to help where I can. So if you feel it is right, A “very helpful” rating for this answer? Thanks!

Any chance you can gain access by removing the gas tank and a fairing or two? I would avoid taking the carbs off if at all possible. Syncing and balancing the carbs is a nightmare. If you do have to mess with the carbs, have a fire extinguisher handy. SERIOUSLY. The one good thing is that you know the hookup is within reach of the cable. That limits where the hookup can be located.

I looked for a free online service manual but with no success. I also enlarged the image on Babbit's web site but could not identify a hookup point. Any chance some liquid graphite or WD40 would free up the cable? Disconnect at the handlebar lever, add the lubricant, let set for a few hours (adding more every 15 to 30 minutes), Then grasp the outside of the cable and pull. Flex the cable and pull harder? That's about all I can come up with.

I have a 1986 glowing 1200a it cranks up run smooth still it warms up it will idle cold and when it gets warm up to around 2800 rpms the choke cable is broke be the problem if it stuck closed some

Yes indeed the choke being closed even a little will cause this. Replace the choke cable and stop your problem. After warm up the choke should always be fully open.

My 1986 honda goldwing gl1200 only idles with the choke on. why? and what do i look for to narrow down the problem?

Hi, Chuck and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel cap or fuel tank is not venting properly.
2. Fuel filter clogged.
3. Fuel line pinched or kinked.
4. Vacuum line from the petcock to intake manifold cracked.
5. Float needle and seat sticking.
6. Float level too low.
7. Carburetor bowl vent line clogged/blocked/pinched.
8. Idle adjusting screw set too low.
9. Air/fuel mixture screw set too lean.
10. Idle port, transfer ports, slow air jet clogged.
11. Slow fuel jet clogged.
12. Faulty fuel pump.

Hi, have an 86 honda goldwing interstate that wont engage. do you hve any ideas......it's a bike my dad left me and i would really love to ride it again......

For my 1980 Goldwing I changed the clutch cable as it had stretched. Also do frequent oil changes because the engine oil also lubricates the transmission. My left hand grip had also worn a bit where the pin fits so I replaced it when I did the cable.

Can Anybody please explain to me how you extricate the choke cable from the carb end a 250 Yamaha virago?this thing jams with regularity and I'm really jack of sending it to a workshop to be done.

Hi- I've had huge problems with choke cables jamming on my XV250 Virago and finally got fed-up with paying dudes to put on lousy cables at $80 per job- only to have 'em jam again in weeks! The problem is that the plastic inner liner eventually melts at the carb end and jams the cable tight. I've had a cable custom made without the plastic liner at the cablemakers advice. They're going to guarantee it to last too!
Undo the Phillips head screw under your choke lever and retrieve the wave washer and other bits therein. The cable, with a large trunnion swaged here will come away from the lever.
The Carby end is more difficult,
You can opt to remove the fuel tank, pump, cable bellcrank bracket (screwed to the top of the carb) for better access. If your fingers are small enough you might try without so nuch removal but your objective is to unscrew a hexagonal 'nipple' that holds the cable/spring and choke plunger in the carb.
Pull back the dustboot over the cable and you'll see it.
You should be able to use an open end wrench (about 11mm?) to loosen it then use fingetips to unscrew it (if loose enough!) take care when removing the whole lot from the carb- the spring and choke plunger sit on the end of the cable held only by a small 3mm swage. remove these parts from the cable and pull the cable out through its guides along the frame. Assembly is the reverse. I hope this helps some.
Steve
