01 yamaha r1 overheating at idle on hot day, but fans are working?

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Low coolant level.
2. Restricted radiator air flow.
3. Faulty thermostat.
4. Coolant pump or fans inoperative.
5. Vent hose crimped.
6. Air in the coolant and needs bleeding.
7. Engine idling too long or bike moving too slow.

Hi, Tom for this scenario you will need your service/owners manual if you can't find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Yamaha, despair not, for a mere $0 you can download another one. If you want your starter bike to be your ender bike then yes it is a great first bike. Honestly it's kinda like suicide. And you want to jump onto one of the strongest and fastest bikes out there? Do a little more research before choosing because it could literally be life or death depending on your choice. The R1 is a HORRIBLE first bike choice. I suggest you start with a Ninja 250r or something similar. If you don't want to sell and buy another one you might be able to start on a Ninja 500. You do realize that the "1" in R1 stands for 1000cc bike. Be careful out there. John

I have a 99'yzf r1 and I'm not sure what's wrong with it, The bike was running fine yesterday. I got off work today and went for a ride with some friends, I stoped and filled up at a bp and about 15...

Hi sounds like bad fuel, if it was an ethanol blend you bought, it could have a high water content, BP has a fuel guarantee but its pretty time consuming to get them to do anything, especially if it was a distributor site, not owned by BP.
Drain the carb bowls into a clean container and see if you can see any water or contaminants.
If the bike rides reasonably, it might come good on its own, with the next tank full. Make sure no ethanol( so bypass BP)
If you got some free water in your tank most of it will be below the reserve pick up, so the bike may stop completely if it gets to reserve.
Unfortunately if there is water in the bottom of your tank this may require draining the tank. as all the fuel additives will turn this into milky looking fuel that will make the bike run worse.

Signal lights on R1 don't work...

Though I can't recall what the wire colors are for your bike's turn signals, here's how to figure it out: on the turn signals that you bought, first determine which wire is the ground by removing the light bulb and then checking to see which wire has continuity to the turn signal's metal bulb socket base.
Then find out which wire is the running light and which is the turn signal by hooking the ground wire and one of the other wires to a 12 volt power source. Which ever wire makes the brighter part of the bulb light up is the turn signal - the dimmer one is for the running light.
On the bike, match the turn signal wire to the bike's wiring that is 'hot' with the turn signal switch on. Plug the running light wire from the turn signal into the bike's wiring that is 'hot' whever the key is on. Hook the turn signal ground wire to the bike's ground wire(s).
