I have a 1996 Saturn Sl2. It ran out of gas one day and sat on the side of the road for a few days. Well, I finally got it towed home, and changed the fuel filter. The fuel pump is good. But, it is smoking...

Try changing your engine temp sensor, it won't triger a fault code but sets ecu to a defalt setting of -20 or 200 degrees, causing an over fuel situation. Not a garanteed fix but for under $20 it is worth a shot.

You are hitting the rev limiter top range, which cuts off your ignition.

I have a 2001 Grand Cherokee and the problem drives me crazy, but it is the way the car is designed- as soon as you hit the rev limit, it shuts down ignition and your jeep will "buck" - a real pain when you are trying to accelerate into traffic!

You have the 4.0L straight six engine, yes?

If so, please take my advice and learn to live with the minor annoyance of the rev limiter- that engine is IMHO the best Chrysler ever made (nearly "bulletproof"!) and it was so reliable you cannot even get it in a jeep now! For decades, that engine was used in welders, tractors, generators...and yes, jeeps... and it is a favorite among mechanics for its durability!

I left my car for 4 years and when i started it the idle became unstable. in the reverse mode the idle drops to zero. i changed the spark plug and adjusted the ecu and it fixed the problem after using it...

Leaving a car sit that long isn't the main problem. It's the gas.

Over time it thickens and turns to a varnish like material that can gum up key components (like your injectors, fuel pump, fuel lines, etc)

I'm surprised the dealership did not comment on this.

At any rate, the first thing to do is lose what gas is still in the tank. Add OCTANE BOOSTER and Injector cleaner and fill it with High-test. Then drive it around for a while.

Hopefully that will have an effect. I'm trying to avoid surgery on the fuel system. Hence the more passive approach.

Best of luck

Check the fuel injectors and rails for clogging or maybe a seized up ECU. my only other thought is that your throttle position sensor may be shot.

I had this exact same problem and it was the Crank Angle Sensor and Crank Angle Sensor connector shorting out at High RPM.

THe solution was to put some electro-conductive grease on the connector the the sensor.

You'll find the sensor on the driver side near in front of the engine.
