Hi and welcome to FixYa,

While it is possible for the rings to be worn considering the age, only a compression test could confirm this.

Alternately, the possibility is that the carbs flooded and overflowed into the engine through the intake manifold at one time inknown to you.  Draining the contaminated oil from the engine and replacing the oil in most cases should address the issue.

Of course if flooding still occurs, it may be necessary likewise to pull out the carbs for a cleanup with particular attention to the valves coupled to the floats.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

Pull start on a 5700 watt generator is locked up. Tech left the fuel shut off ON over night. It filled my oil up with gas. I drained all the old gas and oil out. Refilled it with 37 ounces of 5w30

Did you remove the spark plugs and drain the fuel from the cylinders? The gas in the oil was definitely a sign that the oil needed draining and replacement, but the pull start may be hydro-locked in the cylinders are full of fuel.

Hand wheel turns half way and won't go any further, nothing appears to be hitting anything

Did you do a thorough oiing "inside" the machine--like take the bottom or back off, hand rotate the handwheel and apply a drop of "fresh, good quality serger oil" every place where metal rubs against metal?

Signs of bad valve cover gasket? 93 ford probe gt. Help

you have to inspect were the valve cover meets the head and inspect the gasket between them to see if you notice any oil leak seaping out from between them, fluid flows down not up or if you notice a leak from this area and there is only signs of the leak from this area that goes down in direction then its a valve cover gasket.if the leak is coming from above then the leak is coming from something above the gasket and you will have to do further inspection.

Hi, I have a 1988 BMW K100RT. It's been sitting in the shed unstarted for 12 months. Today I dumped the old fuel and put half a tank of fresh fuel in, installed a brand new battery, oil filter and engine...

Removing all the old fuel is a good start, the tank is only one point, you also need to flush the old fuel out of the total system including the fuel rail and pipes, to ensure fresh fuel is first into the engine.

Can't get my Ryobi CS30 trimmer started, bought a new spark plug, still won't start. It worked fine last summer, took it out for the first time today, won't start, has plenty of fuel

Is the fuel old or has it been drained and refilled?? Sometimes old fuel will do this. Also make sure the air filter is clean and free of oil/dirt as this will also hinder the starting.

The primer button also is something to check. Push it 7 times, full choke, pull for 5 times, turn to half choke, and the unit should start.

Let me know,
