Question about 1985 Honda GL 1200 Interstate Gold Wing

Honda 1985 1200 Gold Wing

Oover the winter the battery died, replaced battery ran great, but later I left key on,dead battery, charged the battery but the bike will not start.
Tried charging the old battery for 48 hrs, did not disconnect the battery cables while doing this. Charged at 2 amps low cycle charge. Charging gauge went from 0 charge to fully charged, but still no luck.
Replaced battery with a new one and had no power of any kind. Dead. Voltage tested good. Checked the fuses in the fuse compartment in the gas filling compartment.
With charging with the cables connected could it have blown a fuse or fusible link, if there is one,?
Any other ideas as to what the problem may be?

First have the battery(s) tested. A number of car parts places will do it free. The test must be under load. Voltage may be fine in a discharged battery. In a 1985 Gold Wing the problem may be in the ignition switch. have the switch checked out.

1985 Honda aspencade battery doesnt seem to charge

How old is the battery. Unfortunately it's one of those things that need to be replaced every season if your bike is stored during the winter. Once you have a new one and it reaches winter again, do your best to crank and run your bike at least once a week and let if idle for 20-45min.

No electrical

Check the fuses. If they've burned out already, you may need to replace them with higher amperage fuses. If they are fine, and your battery is dead, you have a charging issue and should check the stator

Not charging

First, test the battery to be sure it is able to take a charge and does not have any dead cells.
Check the stator and voltage regulator---Check the wiring and the connector going to the regulator, i have found this connector to be heavily corroded and be the problem on the Gold Wing.

The connection is behind the battery on the left side.... it gets its connection on the top of the relay that has the fuse link in it. Should also mention your bike is designed to charge above 1500 rpm.

Good luck, i hope this helps.

Battery not charging, after a full charge and a short ride with all the lights on bike dies and battery is dead

Your altenator when bad. Have it tested. On the gold wing to replace the altenator you my need to remove the engine from the frame but not on all model GW

I have a 1993 honda goldwing i turn it in to a trike and now when i hit a hard bump it dies i have to turn the key off to reset it and start up

I'm not a Gold Wing owner, but from your brief description it sounds like an electrical problem. When it "dies" do the lights etc. die too, or is it just the engine that dies? Look for loose wiring especially around ignition switch and battery. This is a good place to begin.

Battery

they make a charger called a battery tender which keeps your battery topped at all times with a trickle charge. get one and your batteries won;t die.

Sounds like you battery is shot. Could your battery have been exposed to below freezing weather while not fully charged?? If so you likely froze it this winter and have buckled the plates, If that's a possibility replace it.

Hello James
Hearing your problem strikes right at me. My old Jeep Cherokee had the same problem. You have two possible problems, alternator and regulator. Luckily for you, both can be taken to any good sized auto parts store and tested for free:) The reason it dies is that the bike uses electricity to generate sparks at the spark plugs, if you don't have something to resupply the battery(ie:alternator) then it will slowly die(also causing the lights to dim more and more). The alternator could not be charging the battery, or the regulator could be not allowing the alternator to charge the battery.Taking the out could become quite difficult, my GoldWing makes it extremely hard, but the rest of the job should be easy.

Hope this helps
-Chris
