SOURCE: my radio on my82 honda goldwing dont have sound

(Better1969) is correct. I just bought a 1983 Aspencade and there was no sound to my speakers. The gentleman I bought the bike from supplied new speakers but I quickly ruled that out. There are 3 fuse links behind the left turn signal in the fairing. 1 was a 1 amp, 1 was a 2 amp and the blown fuse was a 5 amp. I didn't have a 5 amp so I put a 2 amp in its place. So far the sound is still working but my FM radio reception is very poor.

SOURCE: Honda GL 1200 Aspencade Gold

I am TOLD that: Most motorcycle have the vin number on the steering head (that is located behind the headlight or fairing. If it has a fairing it will be hard to see. If the frame is the original there should be a sticker or tag located there on one side with the numbers on it and stamped on the frame on the other side. All HONDA goldwings model are located there..
I can't vouch for this being true on the Goldwing, but it sounds convincing

Clutch locknut

I assume you are talking about the big nut on the clutch hub after the cover is remover. Some have locking tabs and some are counter clockwise threads. You should get a manual or see if you can find out for sure which way the nut turns off. I have had several motorcycle clutches apart but not on a Gold Wing. I had a 1982 and a 1984 Gold Wing. The best way if you are 100% sure which way (direction it threads off and on) it comes off is to use an air or electric impact wrench. I hope this helps.

How do I tell if I have a bad starter

yes ths starter can spin without turning over the engine.
1. the starter teeth could be stripped and is just spinning
2. the starter clutch could be out and is not enguaging the engin
You could either take the starter off and test it your self. You could get it rebuilt if it is broken or buy a new one.

I drove to work on my 83 goldwing. At lunch drove without incident. At knockoff, the starter would turn but not engage. Any ideas?

Assuming the starter chain has not broken your one way clutch inside the motor is slipping. On the back side flywheel is a one way clutch that grabs the starter gear when the starter motor spins. It is designed to let go of the gear once the motor fires up. If the mating surface of the one way clutch and the starter gear becomes rough or chattered, it will no longer grab and turn the motor over. To repair this you will have to take off the crankcase cover and pull off the fly wheel to replace the one way clutch and the starter gear. Unfortunately, if I am correct, you will have to remove the motor to replace parts #2 and 15.
