Question about 2007 Ducati ST3

3 Answers

I have a 06 ST3, just turned 3000 miles, I have surging issues at low end, and loss of power intermitantly as if a coil was dropping out and I was loosing one spark plug, I am not loosing the cylinder , or skipping. I have had little luck with my dealership, they appear to be blind in repairs department.

The bike is fuel injected, so clogged jets really doesn't make sense, but vapor pressure build up is an admirable thought. I have heard issues with the ECU on this model and other minor electrical issues but I am not ready to gear up and buy the Ducati scanner for this bike. I will try the vent trick and see if it makes a difference.

  • dschaperja Jun 26, 2009

The bike has 4 plugs, 2 per cylinder, if you loose on plug it feels like you have lost 20 hp. I don't get that inherit hesitation with this bike. As I originally said this problem is intermitant, as for Today I had no issue 35 miles to work then home. I will balance the throttle and check the position sensor.I am on back order for the factory manual , so I am putting together all my notes to proceed with trouble shooting.

Not a solution yet, but good advice, continuing to make the problem repetitive.

I am kinda confused here u say you loose one spark plug but then u say u have no missfire?? here is what needs to be done, balance the throttle valves, test the throttle position sensor for open spots just off idle.

When it dies, release the gas cap &see if that makes a difference? Could be a clogged or crimped vent line. Dump in a little injector cleaner in the tank. It will clean out any **** in the jets.

Let me know
Thanks
Kevin

Engine rpm surges intermitently

Miles? Have you replaced ignition coils recently? Pretty good chance that they could be going bad. I would start by swapping all 8 coils and plugs and probably changing the valve cover gasket as well as those are known to go bad in the 2000-2003 LS

BMW X3 2.0d Loss of power

You might have transmission problem. It could be low fluid level or could be an internal transmission failure. I suggest you to have the fluid level checked for quality. Another thing you can try to reset your transmission. BMW transmission would help you to know about the transmission better.

Sometimes trouble shooting can be very difficult with no codes. It may be the (TPS) throttle positioning sensor (on the throttle body) OR it may be the fuel pressure valve (on the end of fuel rail)

Its recommended that the Ignition coils(all 8 coils) and coil boots be replaced at the same time a tune-up is done or by 75,000 miles. Many symtoms to these failing are: slight jerks/sputter under loads(typically at 45-65MPH or accellerating) or foot slightly on gas pedal, Intermitted misfiring, power loss, stalling. The coils are poorly designed and placed in an area where moist buildup occurs. I personally run into this issue on Fords/Merc/Lincoln models with COPs (coil over plugs) installed. hopefully this helps

NHTSA ID: 05V266000 Issued: 06/20/05 No. of vehicles: 00078675
Fuel system, gasoline:Delivery:Hoses, lines/piping, and fittings
on certain pickup trucks and chassis cab Vehicles equipped with 5.4L
or 6.8L gasoline Engines, the fuel jumper line may have an incorrect
end form.
The fuel line may separate at the connection to the main fuel
bundle. If the fuel line separates, an operator may notice a
gasoline odor and/or fuel on the ground, loss of power, and the
Engine will eventually stall. Fuel leakage in the presence of an
ignition source could result in a Fire.
Dealers will install an external retention clip at the fuel jumper
line to the main fuel bundle connection. The recall began on June
20, 2005. Owners should contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.

ST3 Q&A owners?

1. Is that tank steel - will it hold a magnetic bag? Steel - I use a bag that mounts to the fuel filler and does not touch the tank. 2. What mileage do you get when touring, not thrashing? City, low light comes on at 125 miles (stop start 20 mile commute) takes 4.0-4.2 gals each fill. Highway, light comes on 150-170 miles, same fill. 3. What is the real fuel tank capacity - full to fumes? Never experimented with it. Book says just over 5, I have never put more than 4.7 in it. 4. What are the recommended service intervals? 600 mile and then every 6000 5. How expensive has dealer service actually been? 600 about $320, 6000 about $600 depending on work 6. Fun factor? Lots
