My 86 zx1000r has been a real costly pain. the left coil for cyl # 2,3 does not spark. ive moved it to the right side and it sparks. the right coil did not spark on the left side. so I know the coil is good. ive tried a different cdi, pulse coils, and even the main harness at the same time and yet no spark. I have to walk away or something is getting tore up, Im no ******* and this is a problem ive read from other zx owners that have replaced coils and wires and no change so i started else where and now im here,,, any help thanks, Brian

Just a long shot but have you checked the stator it spilts the fire from coil to coil or cylinder to cylinder you probally need to do a resitance test on both sides of the stator to see if there the same i hate to see you spend more money but if you have done eveything u said thats the only thing left and since u said sometimes my money is on the stator

  • Anonymous Jun 30, 2009

i still think u have a ground or stater problem it sounds like its been sitting and buildin up so when you tried it it sparked they will do that.... buy a stator if it doesnt work you can sell it on ebay for what u got in it before you do it check all your ground all of them frame electrical coils battery everthing but my money is still on the stator

tHE MORE THOUGHT i GIVE THIS. tHE HEAVIER i PONDER AND LEAN TOWARDS A BAD GROUND,OOPSsoryy bout that. Ok, No doubt your battery is grounded to your frame, correct? and the engine is grounded to the frame? The intensity of a spark is based on sipply and demand. The store up energy within the coil makes every effort to fuuly discharge on command across the spark plug gap. In order for the apark to have a solid assurance to jump that gap, the grounding of tha park plug has to be good, The wider the gap the harder the spark has to jump. If the coil hasn't the energy to discharge that much energy, it either not try or find another way. So, back to the ground.. The engine is suspended on vibration isolators and those make poor grds. The engine has to ground in a round about way, pedals gears, shafts, etc. Which in reality a poor grd. Try grounding your engine directlt to the battery, You can test the spark by a test wire from the spar plug to the battery negative. Plug out and in plug wire and test lead from the base of the spark plug tang away from the center electrode so it has to leap the gap. If your spark is hotter, The ground is the problem. Good luck. when you tap on the componant, are you causing a grounding or breaking a ground? Those units are usually sealed snd unless it was overheated, should not have any kiise or movable parts. Will it still spark if the unit is held away ftom the bike?? try to insulat it s mouting in case its leaking underneath.

I recently got a 1985-86 Honda VF1000R Interceptor. The coil that fires 2-3 has no spark. I can't seem to figure it out and could use a little help?

Question edited for a bit more clarity.
Question moved to Honda model category.

Well the obvious thing to do it take coil 1/4 and swap it with coil 2/3. Does the error move? If it does, you need a new coil. If it doesn't you move to the ignition module. In my day it was ignition points!

How to fix code P0306 cylinder 6 misfire?

Swap spark plug with cylinder 4. Swap COP (coil over plug) with cylinder 2.
If problem moves to cyl 4, bad spark plug.
If problem moves to cyl 2, bad COP.
If problem remains in cyl 6, suspect valve or piston problem.
Start with compression check

Only running on rear cylinder

You are Not getting spark to ur front cylinder. Swap your spark plug, if not then replace your front plug wire. if this is still not the problem ad you are sure the coil is good then look into the wire that gives the coil signal to fire

Jeep 3.7 cylenders 2 & 4 not firing

3.7 V6, mileage?

most likely the HV wires bad.

then bad coil pack.

did you check spark directly at the coil pack?

i use 2 known good HV wires to do that and 2 good test spark plugs.

both plugs grounded to engine (shell)

that is how you test any wasted spark coil pack. 3 coil pack.

if that fails the FSM shows, unplugging it and check the coil resistances. if wrong the pack is bad,

keep in mind the res. can read ok and coil be bad ,due to internal insulation break down (internal shorts)

if thats ok. the resistance , make sure the wires are not (primary)

to the coil (the low voltage connnector)

if that is ok, its mostly likely a bad coil, (pray not bad PCM)

if tool-less? start with cheap parts , work to expensive. (guessing)

now wasted spark 101.

if one line opens , both spark plugs die. no spark

the wasted spark is wired in SERIES. ( like Christmas lights)

the magic cuts cost of 6 coil\'s.

so if the HV wires are say, cheap , carbon wire and open

you lose, both spark plugs. use MAG wire and end this issues.

get some nice NGK mag wire or Bosch Mag wires.

you can see i hate carbon wire. for good causes.

(carbon string wire)

mag wires is real wire that is coil spun and is inductive. it

has the correct impedance but is not a resistor its and inductor.

and lasts the longest , and worth every penny.

2008 chevy impala cyl 5 missfire 3.5 eng

sounds like the only thing left is the valve lash. If the intake gasket was bad, it would most likely cause a vacuum leak and effect the overall performance of the engine. You may also notice some oil consumption as well. Also, verify the firing order is correct.

Not getting fire to plug wires. I have replaced coil pack, module, dist pickup, and cap. I have tested and have fire to dist but nothing coming out. This is an 86 2.8 comanche 4x4 w/ 4 barrel Holley carb...

You have spark on the coil wire but not coming from the cap. You replaced the cap right. Did you replace the rotor too. Sometimes the rotor burn in the center and the spark goes right thru it in to the distributor shaft.

2006 dodge caravan, 6 cyl. relaced cole, sparkepugs and wires in oct. 2009. Engine is reading #2 cyl. misfire again. Why

Firts time swap spark plug & ignition coil between two different cylinders and read again if the same #2 cyl. misfires !
If #2 cyl. is OK and another cyl. misfires then spark plug or ignition coil is out of order and must be replaced.
If #2 cyl. misfires again then #2 injector must be checked !
If ignition coils & spark plugs (complete set for 6 cyl.) are replaced then you must check #2 injector !

Had carbs rebuilt, Had compression checked, Okay. Spark is good on all 4.But #2 Sparkplug gets wet but not oily & it runs on 3 cyl. after 8 or 10 miles.

It is giveing all the indications of a coil or spark plug breaking down under load as the machine has two coils one provideing spark to cylinders1&3 the other to 2&4 you can swap them over from left to right just remember to tag the wireing as to its original location before removeing it. sory Ive jumped ahead of my self there before doing any of this swap no 1 & 2 plugs around it may be just a dud plug its cheaper to replace a plug than a coil if the same cylinder continues to break down its almost certainly the coil if however the other cylinder shows a fuel wet plug replace the plugs with a new set enjoy the ride

Firing order for yamaha xj650 1981 motor cycle

without a manual can you set-up the timing mark on flywheel
an see what cyl is compression stroke to find #1 cly

coil 1 are spark wires 1 and 4 cyl

coil 2 are spark wires 2 and 3 cyl

now if still have trouble then (if same plug connection) switch the around inlet plug on coils form bike wire harness or swap spark wires
