its 350cc or 11.8 ounces in the Clyma book, but that's for a 1986 onwards model. you can vary the amount you use to suit your style of riding anyways. I doubt it would be that far from the mark.

SOURCE: how do i dismantle front forks to replace the oil seals

You just needed to.... remove front wheel, support bike on something, undo retaining bolts on forks, tap out fork legs from the top, using a soft mallet. Take out fork seals with a seal pick, (halfords) Replace old seal with new seals, in reverse order) sliding over the fork leg, tapping into place. Then put replace forks etc in reverse order (from dissassembly). Hope this helps

Get the fork oil from the Kawasaki dealer and he will give you the right oil and tell you how much is needed. The gearbox oil is 10w40, any major brand is fine. I think your bike has a oil dipstick? If not then the oil capacity should be on the casing by the oil fill. Worst case, ask the dealer while you are there!

Using 5w oil with stock springs, your oil level should be about 100mm from the top with the fork fully compressed, damper rod pushed all the way down, and the spring out. I hope this helps and good luck. Please vote and leave a message.

How do I refill my fork tubes with fork oil


Begin by loosening the upper triple-clamp pinch bolts and breaking the fork caps loose while the fork is still held by the lower triple clamp. You will need to remove the caps to refill the fork tubes with oil.
Determine if the fork legs have oil drain plugs near the bottom of the legs. If they do, you are in luck and will be able to change the oil without removing the fork legs. Put old newspapers on the floor under the front end. Place a drain pan under the fork legs and remove the drain plugs, one side at a time. Hold the front brake and push down on the fork several times to pump the oil out. When oil stops coming out, reinstall the plugs using new sealing washers.
Without Drain Plugs
If there are no drain plugs (look carefully), you'll need to remove the fork legs to drain the oil. At this point you can decide to have it done professionally or do the work yourself. We'll cover the main, basic steps. Refer to a shop manual to learn all the exact procedures involved. Some motorcycles may require fairings, handlebars, etc. to be removed.
Support the motorcycle either on the centerstand (if equipped) or by using a motorcycle jack under the engine. If you use the centerstand, you may need to place a sandbag on the rear of the seat, hold the front end up using straps from the rafters, or support the bike underneath the engine. Use tie-downs to steady the bike on the jack. Grasp the lower fork legs and try to push and pull the fork toward the back of the bike and forward to check for loose steering head bearings. Inspect the pleated rubber fork boots, if equipped. Check for signs of fork oil leakage and any grooves in the fork tube wear surfaces where the seals make contact. Also check for looseness between the fork legs and tubes that would indicate bushing wear.
Remove the front wheel and axle assembly. Support and tie the brake caliper(s) out of the way. Remove the front fender and speedometer cable, if equipped. With the fork leg fully extended, remove the top cap from a leg. Be prepared as there may be some spring pressure pushing against the cap.
Loosen and remove the pinch bolt from the lower triple clamp and lower the fork leg. Note any shims or washers and spring. Turn the leg upside down in a drain pan until oil stops flowing out. You may have to move the damping rod in and out to get the oil out. Repeat the procedure for the other side.
Reinstall the fork legs and other removed components in the reverse order of removal.
All Models
Add the exact amount and type of oil recommended by the manufacturer. Some motorcycles call for the use of a dipstick to determine how much oil to use instead of just pouring a certain amount of oil back in. Follow the manufacturer's shop manual recommendations.
Carefully install the threaded top caps by hand to avoid cross-threading. Tighten the pinch bolts and top caps to the factory-specified torques. After the brakes are installed, pump up the lever until the brakes feel normal again. Once the bike is assembled and on the floor, push down on the front end to verify the suspension's response. Turn the steering from its left to right limits to ensure nothing is binding, and check all controls including the throttle for proper operation.

How much fork oil do I put in each leg of my zephyr 1100


Is you have taken the forks apart and changed the fork bushes, ie forks are totally dry, you will need about 520ml in each fork leg. When refilling and will the springs removed, add about 550ml per leg, the stroke the forks numerous times to expel any excess air. Then with forks compressed the oil level should be adjusted to 119mm from the top of the fork to the oil, ie the air gap to the oil. The add springs and spacers and reassemble.

Change fork seals


you need to undo the pinch bolts on the yolks and remove the front wheel & mudguard. Undo the bolys retaining the brake caliper and swing it towards the frame downtube, secure it with string. Withdraw each fork leg and clean up with a soft rag. On each leg, remove the top bolt (slowly to release spring pressure) and pour out the fork oil and discard it. Pour in a small amount of parrafin and swill it around a bit to clean out any residue. Remove the dustcap or gaiter and put it on one side. You will now see the fork oil seal. If it has a circlip then remove it, if not, then don't bother. Prise out old seal carefully making sure not to mark the soft alloy of the lower leg or the chrome on the stantion. Rub a little fork oil onto the new seal and carefully slide it over the stantion, pushing it all the way down. Use a piece of wood to firmly push the seal into the lower leg until it sits squarely and fully into place. Replace circlip if necessary and refit dust cover. Refill each fork leg with 142 ml of 10 wieght fork oil and replace top bolt. pump the leg a few times to settle the oil and then refit the legs in the reverse order of removal. When done, pump the forks a few times, go for a cuppa whilst it settles and then you are all ready to go.

To change the fork oil, look down on the lower part of each fork leg just above the axle on the backside of each leg and you'll find an Allen plug or small screw. Take this screw out, hold the front brake and push down on the front forks. The fork oil will come out of the tube. Do both sides at the same time. Once you get the oil out of them, reinstall the drain plug. Then, take the large hex cap on ONE TUBE AT THE TIME and pour the correct amount of the correct fork oil into each tube. There is a specific amount of oil that must be poured into each leg. Since you simply drained your forks instead of disassembling them, you should use what is known as the "Wet" quantity of oil. I'm pretty sure your bike takes 9.0 ounces of oil in each leg. Call your local dealer and they'll tell you how much oil to put in. Your bike came from the factory with "Type E" oil in the forks. The viscosity of the oil determines the dampening effect of the forks. Heavier oil will stiffen the front forks, a lighter viscosity of oil will make the front end softer. You can check the Internet for fork oils and they should give you a comparison of what weight oil is equivalent to "Type E" oil. I think PJ 1's 30 weight oil is the same as type E Harley oil. Use only "fork oil" in your front forks as it has special "anti-foaming" agents in it. If the oil foams up, you'll lose the dampening effect in your forks.

How much oil do i put in each fork leg and where does it go. does it go inside the internal suspension and or just inside the fork leg. cheers johnny


Hi Johnny, when you pull the inner leg out where the seal goes on, thats where you put the oil in but you need to make sure all old oil is out and you bleed the new oil as you put it in by simply pushing leg in and out, check with your dealer or service manual as to the amount and grade of oil, they come in different grades!!

How do I soften up the front suspension other than changing the fork oil from 10 weight to 5 weight. the bike rides too rough and I"m about 160lbs. thanks


Try draining a very small amount of oil from each fork leg, there should be a small screw at the bottom of each fork leg for draining oil. See if you can let out the same amount of oil from each leg, i would start with about 30ml from each one. Make sure the front wheel is jacked up off the ground, so the oil wont come out under to much pressure.
Apart from that, yes change the oil, but put less in, that will make it softer, its not so much the oil weight, but more so how much oil you put in, less for a softer ride.

Suspension oil change


let the oil drain right out of each fork leg first put back the plugs and tip in 128ml +/- 2.5ml or if you wont it in old money! its 3fl ozs,app in each leg down through the top bolt hole on the leg, use only the right oil bont just tip in any old oil or the forks will get very stiff and hard to move

hi,replacing the seal is quite easy,although it will sound complicated,jack up or lift the bike off the ground so that the front wheel is in the air(about 12-14 inches should be enough,remove the front wheel from the bike,remove each fork leg,this is done by undoing the bolts(4 on each leg)the front fork is quite easy to work on just do one at a time,remove the dust cover from the top of the staunchion tube(larger diameter tube),beneath that dust cover you should see a retaining clip that holds the seal in place,remove the retaining clip(and dont lose it),the seal is now ready to remove,the easiest way that i know to do this is to force a screwdriver through the body of the seal,you may need to hit the screwdriver with a hammer as some seal have a tin backing plate,put a hole through the seal on each side of the fork leg taking care not to damage the chrome of the fork leg,then use the screwdriver to lever the seal out of the fork leg,to reinstall the new seal,put a smear of grease or oil around the outside of the new seal,slide the new seal down the fork leg and seat it squarely into the fork tube,very carefully tap the new seal into place being very carefull not to damage the outer surface,i use a small piece of dowell type timber to do this as the wood doesnt damage the seal surface,i use a small ballpeen hammer to tap the wooden dowell,once you have the seal seated down the tube you should be able to see the groove for the retaining clip,reinstall the retaining clip making sure it is seated corectly,replace the dust cover,if you are going to replce the fork oil or top it up do this once the fork leg is back in the bike,repeat the whole procedure for the other fork leg,once you have done the fork seals reinslall the fork legs back into the bike and refit the front wheel,to top up the oil in each leg,simply undo the large cap on the end of the fork leg,you may have to remove the handlebars to do this,be carefull as the cap will be spring loaded and can easily fly off if you are not ready for it,top up or fill with the correct weight oil for your bike(normally a 10w oil),check with your local honda agent for the correct quantity,normally between 400-500 mls,this all sounds quite complicated but is actually quite easy and can be done with a minimal of tools,each fork shold take about 1/2 hr to do...hope this is a help to you

How to fix a leaking fork


hi there ,, if u have taken the forks out ready ,,then u already have an idea wots wot ,, wen u put the new seals on ,, be sure to well oil the seals be putting on to the fork leg,, oil up the fork leg aswell ,, with any oil to hand,, or the seal will pinch or stick as u work your way down the fork tube ,, wot i do to seat the seal in to the bottom part of the leg is use a piece of drainage plastic pipe the same diameter,,,ie, like u see on sinks and washin machines,, the white pipe, use this to push the seal down,, to be able to put on the circlip to hold them in, ,,ive known people to use a hammer and screw driver, to push seal in to its seated postion and marked the fork leg,,and put pits in the leg,, so the seal pops straight away,, avoid the hammer,, cheers,,
