Question about 1991 Gilera RC 600 R

1 Answer

Gilera Nordwest Carb setting

Hi , this is Cesar from Spain.
My bike is a Gilera Norwest 600 cc equipped with a Teikei double carb E27PV2A (same has the Yamaha XT 600 use).
The main carb is a normal round-slide carb connected to the twist grip.
Secondary carb is a vacuum type carb.

And these are the symptoms:
1- The engine starts well with the starter pulled on, but about 20 seconds later, the rpm comes down very soon and the engine stops.
(without using the starter, the engine starts quiet well if I help it a little bit with the throttle)
2- Since I can not use the starter to warm the engine, it's very difficult to keep a uniform idle until the engine gets quite warm.
3- When I'm warming the engine (throttle blows) before ride the bike, the engine rpm returns to the idle rpm more slowly than normal (some times do not return to idle for a while)
4- From about 3500-4000 rpm to full open throttle the engine runs really smoothly and powerful.

But under 3500-4000 rpm, (riding behind slow cars) the engine runs not so smoothly and a bit unstable (like jumping a little bit)
5- Also I have some back fires when close the throttle (for example, before take a curve)
And this is my problem. (Air filter is OK, spark is OK, carb float level is OK, jets are OK)
Any idea about what's going on with my carb?

One more things:
The workshop manual said that the Air screw must be turn out 1,5 turns (+/- 0,5) but other info in internet says, 3 turns (+/- 0,5) ...which is the correct setting?

Thanks in Advance for your help

Hi,
I have a gilera RC 600 which has the same engine as the nordwest, the problem could be the carb needs to be stripped and cleaned and replace the foam air filter with a paper one. For accurate advice and spares which are quickly posted, contact BOB WRIGHT at 0044193451033. He is the official UK gilera specialist, tell him I sent you, say the guy in southern Ireland, and he will look after you. Good Luck.

    Hi Cesar,

If you are referring to the air mixture screw, it's 1.5 turns out from fully in position, plus or minus half a turn, depending on the atmospheric pressure. (1.5+.5 or 1.5-.5 turns)

    Good luck.

I'm having a few problems with my Gilera the bike starts up fine and doesn't cut out or anything just stays at 1000rpm but if you go to say 6000rpm the bike bogs out and then goes back to 1000rpm

Probably a carb issue. It sounds as though the idle jet is clear but the main jet is blocked. So your bike starts and idles, but as soon as you ask for more fuel, not enough gets through the main jet and the bike bogs down. Buy a manual and a can of carb cleaner, take the carb off, remove the bowl, remove the jets and leave them soaking in carb cleaner overnight. You might need to use some fine wire to poke through the jets if they are very blocked..

Hi i have a gilera nordwest 600C 1993-1994 It will only start from a bump start. I have replaced, spark plugs, cleaned carbs, overhawled the starter, replaced battery however not fiddled with the clutch on...

Sounds like the starter clutch is sticking on thereby stopping the engine from rotating fast enough

Good Luck
Hope this helps.

Gilera runner 50cc wont start

Don't do the gas down the spark plug thing. It's a bad idea. Do the following >
Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Is there any water or trash in the bowl? Drain a cup of gas from the tank. Is there any water or trash in the cup? Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ).

Drain the carburetor. There should be a screw on the lower side or bottom of the carb float bowl. Remove the screw then replace it after the fuel drains. Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carb to fill with gas. Install a new stock NGK spark plug and try to start the engine. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetor from the engine.

Remove the float bowl and clean the entire carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. Remove the idle screw and the air screw on the outside throat of the
carb and spray into the screw holes as well.
< < READ CLOSELY > >
Be sure to put these two screws back in the same hole they came out of. IMPORTANT > do not tighten these two adjusters down. Only screw these in until they LIGHTLY seat. Now turn each adjuster one and one half turns outward. Put the rest of the
carb back together, clean the air filter and install the carb. Let the float bowl fill then start the engine. This process should get you back on the road.

Please rate this solution. Thanks!

Misfire

If i remember rightly gilera nordwest is a single cylinder so the most common problem would be the spark plug over heating witch could cause the spark to break down.If that doesnt help i would look at the stator plate.

Tires

Under well-lit conditions look for any signs of punctures (such as nails or shards of glass) which might potentially lead to a loss of pressure or a blowout. Bulging or cracking might also occur on old tires; make sure you roll your bike forward in order to see all surface areas that come in contact with the road.,
