My oil change sign popped out and shortly after that my check engine sign came on. my auto dealer is telling me that my oil pump is messed up and is charging me $1200 with labor. is the price reasonable or too much?
Hi Tenzin, When the engine is started is the oil pressure warning light taking a long time to go out or is it the same as it has been previously? Is the engine making any strange sounds? As the engine check light is now showing, what faults have been recorded aand displayed when the vehicle was diagnostically scanned? The engine check light indicates faults in or related to the electronic management systems. I believe you would be well advised to have a diagnostic scan carried out at a different dealer to determine the real reason the engine check has come on. Regards John
The price is very reasonable as it entails removing the motor from the car then removing the sump oil pump and replacing same unfortunately there are no short cuts to doing this job so to set your mind at ease price the oil pump your self and then ask your mechanic how much is his labour an hour and also get other quotes from other garages just to set your mind at ease hope this helps you regards keith cameron
SOURCE: Rear Main Seal leak on 1996 toyota camry, 6 cyl sedan automomatic
Rear main crank seals are very difficult and time consuming to replace. The seal doesn't cost that much - it is the labor/tiime it takes because --- you've got to take the whole car apart --- that is both
front CV joints have to come out -- then the tranny has to come out - I have a 1996 Camry and it has an irritating rear main seal at 147,000 miles and I have not had it fixed because the shops tell me it will cost around $650 to $800 for them to do it --- $1200 is pretty excessive for that job!
Your power rack and steering is not so hard -- most shops in this area would charge $650 max for that job including the price of the new rack and pinion. Pretty easy job -- half the cost is labor - the other is for parts.
Any more questions --- reply to [email protected]
SOURCE: Where is the oil pump located on the 2001 RAV 4?
I would call around and get some estimates and find out if your mechanic is being competitive. The oil pump is a big job, and is located in side the oil pan. If I am not mistaken, on the rav4 there is a cross member that goes across the oil pan preventing you from just taking it down. You lhave to unbolt the engine mounts and jack the engine up enough to remove the pan and get to the pump. I would still recommend calling around and getting some estimates. The rav 4 is not known for having oil pump issues. Could you please tell me why your mechanic says you need to replace this part?
SOURCE: check engine light on-code says egr valve is bad
the egr system consists of control circuits as well as the egr valve itself. troubleshooting will have to be performed in order to pinpoint the fault. the valve may just need cleaning. there may be damage in the long run since the egr system introduces exhaust gas to the air intake to reduce combustion temperatures.

SOURCE: I'm being charged 750 to replace the Oil Pan Gasket
TOO EXPENSIVE.. MOTORS BOOK IS 2.7 HOURS..
SOURCE: Engine check came out on
you can do it yourself, make sure the engine is cool cause it gets hot down there, and you may need a special socket depending on the location of the sensor you are changing, there is probably more than one, be warned you only had a code scan so it may not cure the problem, if you had an engine real time scan done it would tell you why the o2 sensor is malfunctioning, good luck
