Question about BMW R 80 Motorcycles

I have a 78 R80/7 with Bing cv carbs. I have just rebuilt them and cleaned out the tank. It starts with choke but will not run with choke off. As I give it throttle it will stall.

It will stall out just by backing off the choke. Even giving it a little throttle will cause it to stall, The plugs and wires are good and there are brand new in line fuel filters installed.

I could not understand at all the previous answer.

I have rebuilt the carbs with new floats, air mix screws, main jet and all the o rings. There is an air filter installed. What is a copper like petrol injector?

If the engine needs choke on to run well then it means there is not enough petrol going to the combustion chamber, this sometimes can be an issue with the carb itself.I would suggest you first drop the carb to bits and remove any plastic for example rubber seals and/or float etc and when there is only metal left put in soaked in thinner overnight or a few days...If this does not solve this problem then you need to increase fuel going in by either putting an air filter on it which minimize breath in air and hence more petrol or else you need to increase the copper like petrol injector which may have like let's say 80 to 88..You will need to play around with it until you get the proper setting..Remember that insufficient petrol may cause the piston to seize,so be careful not to waste your money..I hope this helps and do ask if you have any questions..

It does not matter if you have rebuild the carb as according to my experience these do turn out to be faulty sometimes. If you have allowed it to be soaked in thinner for 3 days and still in need of choke then it's definitely your air mixture is wrong. As I said before, increase the copper screw that allows fuel to be jet into the carb, if it's a 80cc engine then it would probably be around 80-90,so increase it slightly or even try to lift the needle up by 1 or 2 slots allowing more petrol into the combusion chamber. Also these carbs to become faulty over time..Also check your spark plugs for air mixture and adjust accordingly. If you notice that the engine gets worst when removing the air filter then it's definitely needs more petrol from the carb to run smoothly. Is it a mikuni made or delorto?

This means that while starting your bike you pull up to much accelerater try starting it with very little amount of accelerater.. there could also be the plug problem or its wire.. while another thing could be fuel filter if you have one..thank for consulting

Ski-doo won't stay running or idle

sounds like it could be the air to fuel ratio. if it only want to run with the choke on. I would say to make sure all your nuts and bolts are tight and that you check the gaskets in between the carb and the motor. another thing you could do is get a can of starting fluid and spray it around the carb while the motor is running (do not spray it in the carb)if the idle changes or if it dies you need to replace gaskets.

I have cleaned the gas tank, fuel lines and rebuilt the carb. It now runs but just at idle almost in the choke position. I have played with the throttle and it wants to die when I move it to normal ru

if it runs only in choke it sounds like its lean (choke reduces airflow and gets back to a mixture it will run on.....just). It could just be a small bit of crud in the carby jet. You cleaned the fuel system.....did you install or replace a fuel filter? sometimes cleaning the tank and lines stirs up stuff that needs to be filtered.....even though you may had cleaned and rinsed out a lot.

Carb. needs to be rebuilt. If your choking the engine it to keep the alive and you've cleaned and replaced everything else, I would recommend carb. overhaul.

94 1340 with a mikuni carb that has recenly been rebuilt it will only stay running with the choke pulled. Give it gas it dies let go of the choke it dies. I need to know where to start looking .

I'd start looking at whoever rebuilt the carb. To begin with, this is not the original carb that came on the bike. It came with a Keihin CV type carb. But the symptoms you are describing sound like you are not getting any fuel through the slow speed circuit. The choke you are talking about is actually an enricher circuit if the Mikuni is a Screamin' Eagle carb or one of the flat side carbs made for a Harley-Davidson engine. The enricher circuit has it's own fuel metering system. It mixes fuel and air that the engine runs on when the engine is cold. The mixture is very rich as well. But when you crack the throttle the least bit, the air that the engine draws in comes in through the main venturi instead of the enricher circuit. If there is no fuel or not enough fuel in that air stream, the mixture is too lean for the engine to run and it dies. If the carb had not been "rebuilt", I'd say that the jets were stopped up or that the accelerator pump is not working.

Good Luck

I have a electric generator with a 5 horse briggs engine it was hard to start and ran with full choke. I ordered a rebuilt kit # 495606 and installed. The only way the engine will run , is to pour gas...

it has a blocked fule line and maybe blocked jets in the carb first clean all the fule lines from the tank down check the filter in the tank as well they do get rust in them, if fule is reaching the carb strip carb and clean all jets,, dont go poking wire into the jets it could distroy them check that the flote is free and lifting then clean the air filter and try starting it up,,,it should run ok then
