Because of the plastic gear on the odometer shaft is some teeth . You'll have to replace the entire speedometer . Or take the vehicle to a shop that does those types of repairs. I went to the junkyard and bought the entire instrument cluster for under 50.00$ . Did it myself. Tedious job don't be in a rush could break something else. .

look into your Vehical speed sensor.. as the problem. speedometer and odometer both get their data romr that unit... it is attached to the transmission. if no manual then go on line to find a picture of what it looks like. and where to l;ocate it.

If the odometer stopped but it shows speed it is not the cable. There is a small plastic gear in the speedometer which will strip if you reset the trip odometer while the car is moving. Any speedo shop can repair it

Hello BDG, The answer is no. If the VSS fails on your 97 Chevy, you will lose both speedometer and odometer functions. If your speedo is still working and your odometer is not, you have a broke odometer. This is a common failure with a lot of the older vehicles that were fitted with the mechanical odometer registers. If the speedo and odometer do not work, the problem is usually the speed sensor in the transmission. If the odometer works but not the speedo, the problem is usually inside the speedometer assembly.

The speedo and odometer both use a signal from the speed sensor in the transmission. If both have stopped working, the problem could be the sensor.
If the odometer still works, the problem is inside the speedo head.

More than likely one of the gears in the speedo is slipping on it's shaft. I have a Mercedes with the same proble. I doubt that this is a fixable problem short of replacing the unit. Contact a speedometer shop in a major metropolitan area and see what they say. If you live in the country or suburbs you're porobably out of luck.

The gear in the speedometer assembly is broken causing the odometer and trip odometer to be inop. You can either buy a new speedo head or buy a gear kit from an online source (google Ford speedo odometer inop)for the kit.

Your cable probably came loose from the transmission or the speedo. If the cable is good, then you probably blew the speedo. It happens.

the sppedometer gets a signal from the vehicle speed sensor in the transmission. The speedo cluster then converts that signal nd sends it to the speedo & odometer and to the enine computer. I suspect you have a bad speedo head. Does the odomter record correctly?

Buy a used speeo on Ebay for a good price. Analog (needle) or digital (numbers)?
