My Suzuki gsx1100F Katana bike won't start. The battery is good, as are the fuses. When I turn the ignition on there is just a high pitch whirring sound coming from the starter motor area. Is the problem...

It sounds as if the starter is turning but not engaging so I'd suspect the clutch or the gear is loose or without teeth, but even without teeth you'd likely hear unpleasant grinding noises. I'd expect the clutch and starter are all one unit. (They are on a car where space is less critical than a bike.) Try giving the starter a bang with the handle of a screwdriver or hammer to see if it frees the gears to engage while you're trying to start it. If it starts, replace the starter. You should get a re-core charge if you don't bring in the old starter. (You do with cars.)

2008 F 150 won't start the engine tries to start but doesn't catch and turn on

Probably your starter solenoid does not engage gear to catch the flywheel to turn your engine. If I'm correct you hear clicking and grinding. Let me know is this some of the simptoms.

2008 flhrc starter grinding sounds

Usually, starter grind is either incorrect pinion gear and clutch ring engagement, or a damaged overrunning clutch drive assembly.

My 2002 Buick Rendezvous starts sometimes but other times after starting perfectly it just grinds , but after an hour or so it starts ....someti

The starter has a Bendix that pops in when you start to spin the starter--it or the contacts that engage it could be bad. Had this issue with a few vehicles---starts fine and next time click or will grind and the Bendix is not engaged.

The starter if removed can be examined and or tested---My last one on a 4 runner with it out was able to see burnt contacts and decided not to replace just them but got a rebuilt starter and problem was cured.

May be a good idea for a mechanic to look into this.

I own a 1986 Yamaha VMAX 1200. When the bike is started it sounds like the starter motor is slipping before it properly engages. It makes a terrible sound but eventually starts. What needs to be replaced...

I assume the noise is a high piched grinding noise as thats the most common problem that I have seen on mid '80s yamaha bikes. If that doesn't describe your noise let me know, but if it does you may have a worn starter or.

Sounds like the starter clutch is slipping and or beginning to fail. You should take it back and have them inspect the starter clutch for scoring or damage.

Trouble starting 1990 jeep cherokee

IF THE VEHICLES STARTER TURNS, BUT DOES NOT ENGAGE THE STARTER BENDIX IS THE PROBLEM. YOU CAN REPLACE THE BENDIX OR YOU CAN JUST GET ANOTHER STARTER. IF IT IS GRINDING AWAY AND NOT ENGAGING CORRECTLY IT WILL DAMAGE THE RING GEAR ON YOUR FLYWHEEL EVENTUALLY. REPLACEMENT OF THE FLYWHEEL WILL BE COSTLY IF YOU DON'T DO YOUR OWN WORK. ALSO TO REPLACE THE FLYWHEEL IS A LITTLE LABOR INTENSIVE AND REQUIRES SOME TIME TO COMPLETE.
