Question about Harley Davidson FLSTC - FLSTCI Heritage Classic Motorcycles

How to check primary oil level to see if it is low!, found some oil of a sort on my kickstand after a 100 mile ride.. started making a sound like a bad break (pad)s do... throttle up and the sound seems to go away,thinking my oil in primary is low.. not sure if it a wet or dry primary... 1996 FLSTC

Level the bike ..... remove the derby cover, the primary fluid should come up to the level of the bottom edge of the diaphram spring

My transmission on my 2001 flhrci suddenly started leaking. don't notice leakage when bike is upright


Clean all oil from the bike exterior. Leave it sitting in an upright position for a period of time. This may require a bike lift or other such device. Then look for leak source. Make sure oil level is not too high. When changing oil it often gets on the cross member and may leak when on the jiffy satnd for a while until it is all gone from this area. Make sure to always use thread sealant and a good o-ring on the drain plug.

Just bought a 2007 ducati monster s4r with 1749 miles that seemed to run fine until after a couple hour ride. the next day, the oil light and maintenance warning came on it but started, then suddenly shut...


A couple things to check. I have an 02 S4, so I'm not just guessing here, also have a 99 750, anyway, check the kick stand switch and wires, Then make sure you have the right key and nobody has messed with it, do you have the red key? Make sure it is in neutral. It will not start in gear with the kickstand up. has to be in neutral. The disabler will shut down the entire bike, you will get nothing. So i am assuming it is the kickstand switch or the kill switch. Check them out.

I have a metallic noise from the clutch direction. only when i drive not when the Motor runnin in stand


I've heard this before and it turned out to be the front belt drive pulley was worn in the splines area where it goes on the transmission final drive gear. The tell tale sign is an oil leak from this area about the size of a quarter or half dollar after you ride. You can wipe the oil up and it won't leak anymore until you start the engine or ride the bike. This is oil running down the spines of the final drive gear due to loss of tension on the quad seal behind the pulley spacer. The metallic sound is the sheave of the pulley rubbing the backside of the inner primary. Check the oil level in your primary and your transmisson. If the transmission is low, this could be the reason.

Small amount of oil on the bottom of crank case on the kickstand side! its not pouring but does run down the kickstand! bike only has 10k miles


The oil could be coming from anywhere. Just because this is where you see the oil doesn't mean that it's coming from there. When riding, the wind blows the oil around and sometimes you see it well away from where it's leaking.

You need to wash the bike paying particular attention to cleaning all the oil off the engine. Then, take the bike for a short ride of about ten miles or so. Check the plugs where the crankshaft position sensor and the voltage regulator plug into the case. Also, there is a large O-ring between the engine and the inner primary case. This could be leaking. For that matter, the cam chest cover could be leaking and running all the way across the bottom of the engine and dripping off.

A method we used to use was after washing the bike thoroughly and taking the bike for a short ride, we would powder the suspected area with foot powder or talcum powder. Blow off the excess but the oil would hold onto the powder giving it's source away.

Oil light on - bike won't start


I will guess that your bike cut off when you put it in gear because you still had the kickstand down. That is normal, it is a safety feature to keep you from riding away with it down and crashing when you make a left turn and the kickstand hits the ground.

To check your oil you have a sight glass. Stand the bike straight up and down and have someone look in the sight glass, it is probably on the lower part of the bike on the right side. The oil level should be above the middle, but not covering the whole glass.

Try this process. Go out to the bike, turn on the key and put it in neutral. Check your kill switch, make sure that is in the run position. Now try and start the bike and report back with what happens.
Does it turn over but won't start?
Does it refuse to turn over?
Do the lights come on the instrument cluster for a few seconds, then go out except for the low oil pressure light (normal for that to stay on unless the bike is running.

Oil issue


it really sounds like you have water in the oil or some other contaminant (bike wasn't run on Castor oil?) You probably want to drain oil into a clean container and flush system before you do serious damage. Bike is geting hot enough to boil off water?
