I have just bought another engine for my 1982 xj650,it is supposed to be a 1980 engine but it has ycis on it,i am not sure what this means,will this be ok for my bike,thanks

Hi Dave...I think you mean YICS, which stands for Yamaha Induction Control System. Back in the day this was the latest & greatest in modern technology, this engines are considered classics now.
Yamaha introduced Yamaha Induction Control System in 1979 as a fuel-saving engine system in 4-stroke motors...It was ahead of it's time actually. These engines burn cleaner, get better mileage, and produce more power. It will work fine in your bike.

I hope this helps & good luck with your bike.

Hi, Rcimino416 for this scenario you will need your service/owners manual if you can't find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Yamaha, despair not, for a mere zero $0 you can download another one.

Needed manual for 1982 Yamaha 250 SR Exciter

Hi, Mblanchardd2 the vast majority of service, parts, and owners manuals on the internet are "FREE" to download and all service manuals contain wiring diagrams in the back pages. The rest usually charge a modest fee around $10 sometimes more and there is a handful of obscure, rare, obsolete, and very old models that are no longer or never were available, then there is eBay where you may be able to find what you need at a very high price because of its age and rarity. Most of the "FREE" manuals will cover your exact make, model, and year otherwise one will be provided that comes as close as possible to your bike and will have most of the same info that an exact manual would have.
To download your manual please click on the blue links below. Good luck and have a wonderful day.

How much can I bore out my 1982 yamaha exciter

Is your motor fried or are looking for more power?
IF you can find the parts you may be able to get 15-20cc but it's going to cost you quite a bit and you're not going to gain that much power.
As well as you may introduce more problems (jetting, reliability, broken bolts etc.)
Regardless, unless you are going to do this yourself, the cost will be more than the bike's worth.

I have 1982 yamaha 250 exciter it wont start all it will do is click

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Two possibilities:
  • faulty contactors of the starter relay (even if it is clicking); or
  • faulty starter motor.

To verify and check:
  • follow the + battery cable from the + batter terminal;
  • it would end connected to 1 big terminal of the starter relay;
  • the other terminal goes to the starter motor;
  • when starting jumper these 2 big terminals of the starter relay at their lock nuts, not on the threaded portion;
  • expect a big spark;
  • if the starter motor spins, then the contactor of the starter relay is burned or corroded and the entire starter relay needs replacement;
  • if even shorting the 2 terminals, the starter motor fails to spin, then it would be a faulty starter motor, most likely the carbon brushes.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.
