Usually going from 4th to 5th or 5th to 6th the gear doesn't change up just stays in current gear, I have to release cluth and re clutch and then it changes up no problem what could be the cause of this would a tight chain be an issue?
SOURCE: While riding, the 4th and 5th gears do not engage
This behavior is the symptom that your clutch plates are getting worn out. Since power is transmitted from the cam shaft to the front sprocket (smaller dia) is better at lower gears but once the rpm increases the clutch plates do not catch up with the cams rotation, hence slipping at higher gears & in between 4th & 5th gears the pulling power of the engine seems to go to neutral before engaging again. Check your clutch plates as well as the sprocket-chain- rear sprocket for wearing out of the gear teeth & replace if required. You will get back full power & acceleration as when the bike was new.............sodeep
SOURCE: wont go into 1st or 2nd, but will shift up to 4th
Take it back to the shop/mate that rebuilt it and get them to fix it.Or if you did it make sure the shifter drum is in the correct position and the selector lever is functioning correctly.Failing that you'll have to go back inside and check correct installation of selector forks.Make sure the tranny is functioning correctly BEFORE you put the other half of the engine casing together by spinning the outputshaft and going through ALL the gears turning the drum. Hpoe it all works out good for ya ....

Howdy: The 3rd and 4th gears are used the most, after awhile the dog and shifting forks get worn more. Try changing to Yamaha Lube simi-syn oil 10/40. Drain oil after warm up (get trans oil warm). The oil is in a silver 4gal containe at the Yamaha dealer. This oil has helped me.
Good luck - Doug
SOURCE: YAMAHA BLASTER-Only have gears 4th, 5th and neutral?
sounds like your going to have to split the casses to fix trany to me. sorry the same thing hapened to my 2001 blaster.
SOURCE: i get a disturbing noise
check chain tension and that the aft sprocket lines up directly with the front first, if its not that then take the front cover off the countershaft main gear drive and check for play maybe a bearing is worn out..
