Question about Harley Davidson XLH 883 Sportster Motorcycles

2 Answers

I have 1999 883 sportster and it runs for 1/2 hour the when heated up it shuts down. I have checked for loose wires, connections, checked spark plugs, replaced the coil, still the problem persists. Anyone have an idea as to what is wrong?

yes, I checked for spark and gas. Spark was not present with the old coil installed, I also checked the resistance with an OHM meter. When the bike was hot and would not start, I rechecked the coil and the upper leads showed 0.00 ohms, the leads showed 5ohms before the bike was hot.

Check for a blockage in your fuel tank breather. Run with the filler cap cracked open a bit so it doesn't seal. If the problem goes away, you will need to find the tank brather and work out why it is blocked.

How's the jetting on the carb. as well as the float height. Does it star up after a minute or do you have to wait longer> if it starts up within a minute but thens dies within a minute then I would check the jetting and float height, the other problem could be your ignition plate. If it won't start until it cools down, then I would replace the ignitionplate. one easy way to check is make sure the bike is cold and put a hair dryer on the plate to heat it up . see if you can get it to not work just by heating up the plate. if it is the bad part buy the Screamin eagel version of the plate. It's cheaper and has a better performance curve to it.

Hi Anonymous, when checking for spark the CKP needs to measure the compression bump in order to send the correct signal to the ICM/ECM so always check for spark with either a third plug grounded or lift the end of the plug boot 1/2 " off one of spark plugs that are in the head. and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty
2. Fuel supply valve turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded with gasoline as a result of over use of enrichner.
5. Fuel valve or filter clogged.

Hi Mike, if you have a CKP sensor it needs compression to send correct signal to the ICM/ECM, make sure both spark plugs are in heads and use a grounded third plug to check for spark or hold spark plug cable close to spark plug in head. If still not getting spark the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Battery voltage below 9 volts, loose or broken battery cables especially "GROUND" cable to frame.
3. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
4. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose.
5. Faulty ignition coil or ignition / electronic module
