1985 Yamaha Virago XV1000 flooding issue

My 1985 virago xv1000 rear cyl. is flooding out. It pops and backfires, but if i "get on it" it seems to clear up and do alright. If both cyl. are firing and I stop for a traffic light, just before it's time to go I loose the rear cyl. again. But if I catch it before it stalls out and get going, then it "clears" back up. This is becoming more and more frequent. When I get home and pull the plug, it's wet and black-even since a very recent cleaning.

Thanks for any help.

I suspected the float sticking. Was looking for more detailed info. Have not gotten into tearing carbs apart- need more info before getting into.

Thanks, Finish Line. I'll get into the project soon, I'm sure. The camera idea was a great one, as I've never done a carb job and am very unsure. What's the worst that could happen? I just might end up having to put some NEW high end carbs on and solving the problem for a long time. Thanks again.

you need to take seat, tank probally and air box if you have acamrea take pictures as u go if your in unfamiliar ground pop the bottoms off the carbs and pull jets run a piece of a wire wheel through each one to ensure they are clear pull the floats the next part is a tech tip..... shhh get some q-tips and some rubbing compond or wax pull the float needle out and polish the needle seat take some steal wool (xtra fine ) and polish the float needle make sure when u put it back together that they seat properly turn carbs upside down and look at the floats they should be sitting straight across make sure they dont bottom out on top of carbs do the same process if you buy carb kits instead of the polish good luck if you need more help let me know remember to take pictures if your unsure

My XV 1000 RH 130000km,started oiling the rear clyinder during a 500km ride in heavy rain, after some diffulculty I discovered that the rear fuel tap had a failed oring that was allowing fuel to flow thru the vacuum lines which apart from causing rich running also contaminated the crankcase oil,Ive since fitted manual taps and an 1100 engine, cheers, Jim Doherty jimzbitz@xtra.co.nz Auto Engineer NewZealand

Loses power at 4500 rpm, carbs are clean and has no intake leaks. has good sparkplugs an coils are working. front cylinder pops a blue flame consistanly after a few revolutions. exhaust seems colder on...

If your carbs and plugs are fine you may wish to check into you wiring harness to see if you have a cyclinder not firing due to a problem with wiring (frayed or disconnected).

Flooding out front cyl with fuel....rebuilt carbs with new seats and metering valve...floats checked out ok.....did not remove top covers and diaghram....hate to even ask but .....could a bad valve cause...

Theres a problem to the front carburator thus the flooding, the float pin is not sealing of the fuel supply once the bowl is full. You will have to reset the float, remove the bowl and operate the float manually( by your fingers lifting it to seal) letting the fuel to flow, if it stops thn for sure the float needs adjusting, if it doesnt stop the flow thn the pin is not sealing, you may have to replace the float pin.
Hope this helps!.
