Harley transmission slipping

My bike is a 1989 Electraglide Ultra Classic. When I take off there is a grinding sound coming from the primary. I pulled it apart and I did not see anything that was wrong. I took it out to test and now if is hardly holding any gear at all. It feels like the main shaft is just spinning not engaging with the main shaft.... or that it is engaging but the transmission is not engaging. It is making a terrible grinding noise. HELP please!

It sounds like the Nut that hold the inner Belt Sprocket has backed off and stripped the teeth out of the sprocket.
Hard to be sure without seeing it but that is my best guess from what you describe.

Sounds like a clutch problem - the only thing that transfers drive from the engine to the rear wheel that can slip excessively is the clutch - other components can wear but not slip.

I know a huge amount of the Harley range use dry clutches not oil bath types like jap bikes.

Saying that it means its like a car clutch - these types of clutches do not like any abuse as they over heat and wear very quickly reesulting in slipping - as you are describing.

A oil bathed clutch shares the oil in the engine and has friction plates like an automatic gear box - because of the oil that can cool the clutch plates they last pretty much forever and don\'t wear from abuse.

Look at your clutch.

My clutch is a wet clutch. I pulled it apart yesterday and there doesn't look to be any problem with it. I agree though that it seems like it would be a clutch problem. All of the friction plates are perfect so I am at a loss to what the problem is.

SOURCE: TRANSMISSION SERVICING

Most are using Syn3 oil in engine, tranny, and primary.
This simplifies this, and is a decent oil.
32oz of oil in primary.
20-24oz of oil in tranny
99851-05 primary case/ trans oil(Conv Oil)

there are other brands that surpass the syn3 oil but it takes some hunting around to find a supply.
Ammsol is one such brand and they recommend.
20w50 engine
15w40 primary
75w90 tranny

Hope this is of some assistance

SOURCE: noise in trans or in primary chain

It sounds like the primary drive chain is loose. The way I adjust mine is to take off the upper left inspection cover, start the bike and slowly tighten the adjuster until it starts to wine, then back off until it stops. Rev it slowly and listen for a wine. No wine good to go.

SOURCE: removing harley davidson ultra classic gas tank

Drain the fuel either by siphening or removing the cross over tube at the front of the tank and letting it drain that way or just block off those cross over lines and leave the fule in the tank for removal.

0) remove seat
1) drain fuel
2) undo cross over line (bottom front of gas tank.
3) shut off pet **** and remove fuel line from pet ****.
4)there should only be 2 bolts holding the tank on, one at the top front of the tank and one at the back of the tank.

All in all a pretty easy (but possibloy messy) job.

My 2011 heritage softail is leaking oil from back side of primary case, it also has a grinding like sound when's is on neutral idling that goes away when i apply the clutch

Hi, Edgar first thing you need to do is check your primary and transmission oil levels to determine which one is leaking and repair as necessary usually seals or possibly cracked inner primary. The grinding noise could be a loose/tight primary chain, transmission main shaft bearing, primary bearing, or clutch hub bearing, you can remove your primary drain plug and inspect the magnet for metal ants. I am sorry you can't find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Harley Davidson but despair not for a mere $7 you can download another one. Drive belt installation 2000 electreaglid classic

Remove the rear wheel and then remove the primary chain, the clutch, the engine compensating sprocket, and the chain adjuster as an assembly and then remove the primary chaincase housing. Support the bike under the rear fork and engine and then remove the pivot shaft and the spacer THEN slip the belt off the transmission sprocket and then install a new drive belt over the transmission sprocket and proceed to reinstall the pivot shaft and spacer after which you can remove the support holding the engine and rear fork and install the primary chaincase housing, the primary chain assembly and the primary chaincase cover and fill the primary chaincase with lubricant up to the bottom of the clutch diaphragm spring. Install the rear wheel and adjust the belt to the proper deflection dimension and confirm that the rear wheel is properly aligned side to side.

My 03 ultra classic is leaking trans fluid they say its a $1 dollar o ring that cost about $600 to fix?

First off, determine if it's transmission fluid, or primary chain case fluid.
I had the seal on the transmission main shaft go on me once (the seal under the transmission rear drive pulley, behind the inner primary cover).
This can be changed with the transmission still in the bike, but the entire primary needs to come apart, and the transmission sprocket/pulley removed to access it.

If it's primary fluid, it's probably the seal on the inner primary case that the transmission shaft runs through and that the clutch assembly bolts to.
Again, the entire primary needs to be torn down to access this.

Either way, the cost of the part isn't bad, but the labor is the killer, as it's a 6-10 hour job, if I remember the book's quote.

Where do I find the oil drain plug on a 1999 ultra classic

the oil drain plug for the motor oil is the one on the front of the oil pan that is under the transmission, it faces the front of the bike and is a 5/8 head. the one that faces down on the right side of the pan drains the transmission. the primary drain plug faces the left side under the derby cover,it is a #40 torqx wrench.

I,ve got a 2008 Ultra classic, and want to change the fluids. It's got 8000 miles, and i dont have a owners manual. the oil, i can figure out , but the trans, and the primary I dont have an idea.

On the bottom of your transmission, there are two drain plugs, one for the transmission and one for the engine oil. The plug in the center is the transmission drain plug and the one toward the left front is the engine oil drain. The primary drain is a small pipe plug that takes a Torx wrench located at the bottom of the primary cover towards the rear of the bike.

Engine oil three quarts with filter. Then start the bike and let it run for a few minutes. Shut down the engine and check the oil level with the dipstick. The dipstick has two marks on it. "Full Cold" and "Full Hot". Fill to the full cold mark.

Transmission takes 20-24 ounces of oil and the primary takes 38-44 ounces of oil. Do not overfill the primary as it will cause your clutch to drag. All three sections take H-D Syn3 20W50 synthetic engine oil.

I have a 01 ultra classic with a rattling sound coming from the lower left side of the engine. was told I might need to adjust the primary chain or the timing chain. any hints on what to check?

Does the sound come even when the bike is stalled and you accelerate it? If yes, then it must be timing chain and in case the noise comes only when the bike is moving, it must be the primary chain.
