I have a 140 hp with a pertronix ignition - when timing is set to run good it kicks back & breaks the starter - tried gear reduction & broke it also?????? Larry

I don't know what you have the timing set to but when it kicks back like that it indicates over advanced ignition timing or a cross fire condition in the ignition system.

How do I set the ignition timing

I am confused if you are looking for the firing order or the ignition timing. The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The distributor runs clockwise and in order starting at noon = 1. Your PCm will adjust your timing as needed and should not need any adjustment unless you have removed and re-installed the distributor.

Yoyostove laser 73 ee-2 keeps coming up which i know is missed ignition, but after a few times of missing ignition the k-1 leaks from the bottom of the heater what needs to be done about this problem?

Sounds like your igniter may have burned out. You can test the igniter with an ohmmeter. You can also check for voltage on the circuit board where the igniter connects. Don't try to start it again until you check the igniter because unburnt kerosene will just keep building up in the burner. Let me know if you need more help.

Is the pilot light manual or automatic light

MOST modern appliances that use gas ignition (including kitchen ranges) no longer have a pilot light. These appliances are now equipped with a burner assembly with electronic igniters. The following link explains a little theory about how these igniters work:
http://www.fixya.com/support/r401858-replacing_oven_igniter_gas_range

I know the link is for a gas range, but the burner assembly functions are nearly identical, as well as, the type igniters used. If you are having ignition problems it may be a simple matter of a weak or bad igniter. If you ar referring to whether or not the burner ignites automatically, or if you have to manually light it, the burner assembly will ignite automatically as long as the gas valve, igniter coils and igniter are all functioning properly. It can take up to 90 seconds for the burner to ignite. As the igniter ages, you may experience longer ignition times.

If the model number is correct, you can view an illustration of your burner assembly at appliancepartspros.com. The components I've mentioned are as follows: Item 4 - Igniter assembly Item 13 & 14 - Igniter coils (BOTH should be replaced at the same time if found to be defective). Item 10 - Gas valve assembly. If you have any questions, please let me know. Include your complete model number if it is different from the one you posted this question under. I hope this information is helpful to you.

I need to know the timing sequence for a 1998 Mercury Mystique 2 liter

ignition timing or valve timing?

ignition timing not setable.

info:
The ignition system consists of an ignition coil, spark plug wires and spark plugs.
The crankshaft position sensor signal is the basis for ignition timing calculations. The alternating voltage signal from the crankshaft position sensor is digitized by the powertrain control module. This digitized signal is then used to position the closing time of the primary circuit of the ignition coil.
Ignition angle is determined by the powertrain control module in response to engine operating conditions. Once ignition angle has been determined, the powertrain control module interrupts the current to the primary circuit of the ignition coil thus triggering the ignition spark which is supplied to the cylinders through the spark plug wires and spark plugs.
The ignition coils are triggered by the powertrain control module in pairs (cylinders 1 and 4 and cylinders 3 and 2) sending one ignition spark to the firing cylinder and one ignition spark to the corresponding cylinder on the exhaust stroke. This make sures that any unburnt fuel residues remaining in the cylinder on the exhaust stroke are re - ignited to provide cleaner exhaust emissions.

Ffurnace not working. led flashed five times then off and repeat the five times. reset the unit by switching bkr off and back on. led is steady, but no ignition. do smell gas and can see gas meter respond...

If it's a hot surface ignition system I'd guess it has a bad ignitor from your clues. If however it's a spark ignition system I'd guess it has a bad ignition control.

Where is the ignition timing adjustment connector?

On this car the ignition timing is controled by Engine Control Module (ECM) and is not adjustable. However it can be inspeced using a scan tool.
