Hi Anonymous, start by removing the seat and disconnecting the battery ground cable, then disconect the the tail lite and turn signal harness at the connector blocks. note you may have to remove some wires out of the blocks, to facilitate fender removal, by depressing the tangs with a small screw driver and a razor blade to pull them back for installation. Turn signal wires will be one of these. Remove fender strut covers, turn signal assemblies will remain on covers. There is a bolt on the inside of the fender up front in the middle also a couple on the sides that go through the struts. Depending on your patience, small hands, skinny fingers, and 1/4 drive flex sockets and extention collection you might be able to perform this delicate operation with out removing the rear wheel, otherwise by blocking up the bike with wood so rear wheel is about 6" off the ground you can remove the lower shock bolts and let the swing arm and wheel gently down to gain easier access to the inside of the fender bolts.Be patient, be carefull, and use common sence is case I forgot something. Good luck

SOURCE: want to lower a 2004 fxdl from the stock 12 inch ,

I don't think it will. I have a 2002 FXDWG and 1 inch shorter than stock shocks and plenty of clearance.

How do remove the seat? I've removed the bolt attached to the rear fender. The book says to pull the seat back to release the hook from the frame? The seat doesn't want to pull back toward the rear.

If you have a sissy bar on the bike, you'll have to lift the rear of the seat a bit to get the clearance necessary for the seat to slide to the rear. If that doesn't work, take the sissy bar off by removing the two small bolts on either side of the sissy bar side plates. With the sissy bar off, the seat should come off easily.

Good Luck
Steve

My rear tire is off center to the left on my 2003 fxdl is this normal? not wobble and it rides ok

Check to be sure that the rear belt is running straight, (sight along the top or bottom of the belt from rear to front). If the belt is running true, the appearance of the wheel being off center (from the rear) is probably normal. the fender is closer to the tire on one side of the bike than on the other on most Harleys.
