Basic stuff, try the fuel filter if it has one, look for crimped lines or leaking connections. Your bike isn't getting the fuel it needs to go that speed. Something is blocking the flow of fuel.

Are you sure it's a fuel problem? A coil or ignition sensor can cause the same symptoms.

I have a 1986 gsxr 400 just bought it.it only starts the odd time

You should also check ignition, there may be a fault with the coil or ignition generator, am manual would give you basic tests, are all jets clean and clear? Is the float valve letting enough fuel into the float chamber? Is ther good supplies of fuel getting to the main float valve's? Check your spark, it should be ccrisp and fat, and be powerful, ignition systems have so much that can develope intermittent faults, i no your truly in a Nightmare! Good Luck, The Yeti - Hastings
