Question about 1974 Yamaha DT 360

1 Answer

Hi I have a 1974 dt 360s that needs a new RH front fork and as the DT 175 runs the same size 21 inch front wheel as the dt 175s does that mean the front forks are interchangeable ? I have only been able to locate a a new old stock RH front fork for a 74 DT 175.

No not really, the diameter of the fork tubes are probably different, maybe a dt 400 would be closer, replace them in pairs, dont replace only 1,the spring rate & dampening is different, try junk yards in your area, get a complete front end from a dt 400,it should fit.

SOURCE: what fluid to put into front forks, rear shocks, trans

Your bike is 35 years old. Not a lot of 360s left out there. The forks take 10w fork oil. Any dealer will have the oil. Use 10w40 motor oil in the gear box. Don't use any synthetic oils, oil marked "EC", or oil with "special" additives. Stick with the major brands; Pennzoil, Quaker State, Mobil or Shell. If I recall correctly, it takes 2.25 quarts of oil. I think there was an oil dipstick on the bike. Go by the dipstick reading. The dipstick does not get screwed in when checking oil level. See if the oil quantity is embossed on the case just below the oil filler hole. The bike does not have an oil filter.

The stock spark plug is an NGK-B9ES. The rear shocks are a sealed unit I believe. 35 years does dull the memory at times.

Use TWO STROKE ENGINE OIL in the pump. If not using an automatic oil pump, then mix the gas and oil 32 to 1. That equals 4 ounces of TWO STROKE ENGINE OIL to one gallon of gas. NEVER use motor oil in the gas. Only two stroke engine oil.

Thanks for the opportunity to try and recall ancient history. It was enjoyable.
Please rate this solution. Thanks!

Dt 175 wont rev to 7000rpm

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely drained or faulty battery.
2. Faulty regulator/rectifier or high output coil.
3. Faulty power valve, solenoid or installation.
4. Clogged air filter or exhaust.
5. Cracked or incorrect float level.
6. Float needle is not seating.
7. Faulty reed valve.

1977 - 1979 yamaha dt 175

Hi, Skibsy the vast majority of service, parts, and owners manuals on the internet are "FREE" to download and all service manuals contain wiring diagrams in the back pages. The rest usually charge a modest fee around $10 sometimes more and there is a handful of obscure, rare, obsolete, and very old models that are no longer or never were available, then there is eBay where you may be able to find what you need at a very high price because of its age and rarity. Most of the "FREE" manuals will cover your exact make, model, and year otherwise one will be provided that comes as close as possible to your bike and will have most of the same info that an exact manual would have.
To download your manual please click on the blue links below. Good luck and have a wonderful day.

What should my 77 yamaha dt 175 rpm be when idling

Hi, Terry usually around 1000 RPM for this scenario you will need your service/owners manual if you can't find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Yamaha, despair not, for a mere zero $0 you can download another one.

Have a 1974 Dt 175 need help tuning

Hi there and welcome to fixya!

Here are some tips that may help:

1. Make sure plugs are clean and you're using good fuel quality. (tank should be clean of water moisture).

2. Turn the air-fuel mixture 2.5 turns out. This is assuming you haven't replaced the stock jet size. If you have increased the jets. Start at 1.5 turns out, if air filter is clean and free flow, you may use 1 turn out. Turn out or inward to make minor adjustment.
Usually experimenting with the air and fuel mixture would do the trick.

Let me know if this helps.
