Question about 1983 Honda vt 500 ft ascot

Cannot remove VT500 Ascot swing arm from frame

I found your page on the net, and thought I would see if you could possibly help me. I have a VT500 Ascot over here in the UK, where the roads are salty in winter. As is common with Honda square-section swingarms, the rust has got at the underside, so that I need to pull it out to get it welded stronger.
I have everything off the swingarm and the pivot bolts are removed so that the arm is (almost) free, but I cannot get sufficient clearance between the seal on the left side of the swing arm outside the bearing, and the frame, to be able to pull the swing arm straight back out of the frame. Also I cannot clearly see if there is anything under the rubber boot that covers the universal joint that might prevent it sliding off the output shaft from the back of the gearbox.
I am wondering if I have to remove the engine mount bolts to twist the engine enough to get the swing arm to clear the frame?
Any help you can give would be appreciated.
Thanks
Paul Adams

SOURCE: Cannot remove the swing arm from my Honda VT500 Ascot

I know this is an old post, but figured it might help someone else out. I recently had to remove the swing arm on my Shadow 1100 and had the same clearance issue. The solution was simple; I had to remove the final drive, releasing the drive shaft from the universal joint. The final drive was held on by four bolts. May vary on different models. Once removed, the swing arm slipped right out. Just be sure to grease the gears and parts during re-assembly. Best!

Hi, Blinddogs12 nice novella you obviously have a wiring issue that requires a professional diagnosis for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary, transport your bike to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your problem. Sounds like you have a seized engine. If it is seized with age, pour copius amounts of oil in through the spark plug holes and leave to soak for a few days. That will help with seized pistons. If it is bottom end, strip the engine down and repair as required.

I just bought a 1984 honda ascot vt500. It will turn over but not fire. It has been sitting for somewhere from 1 year to 3 years. When i try to jum p start it all of the lights and everything works.

the carb is clogged up. You will have to remove the float bowl and clean the jets. use spray carb cleaner. Use a very fine copper wire strand to probe the jets--do not scratch or englarge. Empty all the gas out of the bike including fuel lines. use fresh fuel. Be sure to count the number of turns you make on any adjustment screw and write them down. This will make it much easier to put back together in proper adjustment.

How to replace swing arm bearings on 1970 sportster

Get the bike up off the ground and make sure it's secure. Remove the rear wheel and the rear shocks. Look for anything else that may be attached to the swing arm such a brake rod return springs etc.

Once you have everthing off the swing arm, take the pivot bolt out and the swing arm with the bearings slides off the frame. Remvove the screw and lockwasher, bearing lockwasher, the right bearing locknut, and the bearing outer spacer. Using a punch, turn out the left bearing locknut from the fork hub and remove the spacer. From inside the fork, press or drive out the bearings and bearing spacers by applying pressure against the spacer. Press or drive out the bearing shields from fork inner side.

Hope this helps,

Good Luck
Steve

Ascot VT500 VT - no power not battery

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Was the main 30 amp fuse checked/replaced? The main fuse would on the starter relay. To locate the starter relay, follow the cable from the battery's + terminal.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.
