No spark from coil to distrubuter


Disconnect the ignition coil output wire at the distributor cap.
Connect a spark plug to the end of the ignition coil output wire which you just disconnected.
Connect a ground wire to the threaded portion of the spark plug.
Disconnect the ignition coil ground wire from the negative terminal on the coil (Green Wire).
Connect one end of a ground wire to the ignition coil negative terminal.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Tap the other end of the ignition coil ground wire jumper on an good grounding point (for example the battery negative terminal) and look for sparks at the spark plug that correspond to the frequency of your tapping of the ground wire.
If you have a good spark at the spark plug, the ignition coil is good.
If you don't get a good spark, check for approximately 12 VDC from the coil positive terminal (black wire) to ground with the ignition switch in the ON position. You should also get approximately 12 VDC from the coil negative terminal (Green wire) to ground
Ignition Coil Resistance Check

In addition to the test above, you may elect to perform an ignition coil resistance check as confirmation of the coil's condition.

Check the ignition coil primary coil resistance by connecting an ohmmeter between the positive (Black wire) and negative (Green wire) terminals on the coil. The resistance should be 0.4 to 0.6 ohms.
Check the ignition coil secondary coil resistance by connecting an ohmmeter between the coil output terminal and the ignition coil negative terminal. The resistance should be 5000 to 7200 ohms.

You may have a bad coil or bad ground or wire connection

Usually the negative wire will be black on most vehicles. Also, the negative terminal will only have a single wire, the positive can have two coming into it.

The positive lead in the one going into the coil .
The negative is the one grounded or shown bare on the outside of the coil.

I'll try to help you, John.
For spark: If your spark plugs, spark plug wires, dist. cap, and rotor are good, check the coil. Take off the negative battery cable. Use an ohmmeter and check resistance between the coil primary positive terminal and the frame of the coil-ohmmeter should show infinite resistance, if not, replace coil. Put ohmmeter positive lead on coil primary positive terminal, and ohmmeter negative lead on coil primary negative terminal-resistance should be zero or nearly zero, if not, replace coil. Connect ohmmeter negative lead to the negative primary terminal and ohmmeter positive lead to the high voltage terminal of the coil. Ohmmeter should not show infinite resistance, if it does, replace coil.
If coil is good (or has been swapped), check that coil primary has power to it with key on. If it does, and no spark, the problem could be the ignition module or the pickup coil. The ignition module should be mounted with the ignition coil. The pickup coil is inside the distributor-this pickup coil is what tells the computer (ecu) the crankshaft position, so is critical for spark timing.

For the pump: the fuel pump relay is in the power distribution box under the hood. When the ignition switch's run wire energizes the relay's coil, power is sent to the pump. You could check for a signal on the pump wire at the tank, with the engine cranking Should be a steady signal then. If not, pull the relay out to check that the power feed for the pump is still there. The power to the relay comes from Fuse link G, a 20 amp rated green fuse link. It is hot at all times, so check for a power signal on one of the relay terminals with key off. One terminal should have power. If not, check fuse link G. If it does have power, put relay back in and have someone cycle the key-relay should click-may feel or hear it. If nothing, try a different relay. If relay was good, but no power to pump, pull relay and check terminals that relay plugs into: with key held in crank, two terminals at relay should have power-the power feed from fuse link G, and now the ignition switch signal to the relay coil side. If all checks out, probably a bad pump. If you checked for power at the tank with the engine cranking, and did have power, that is for sure a pump that needs replacing.

I have a 1995 1200 sportster. just recently put a wide glide conversion kit on it. now i got a accel super coil part#140408 that has 2 negative post and 1 positive post. My factory wiring only has to wires...


You have the wrong coil for your bike. This coil is designed to be used with a "single fire" ignition system. If you have the stock ignition system on your bike, it is the original "dual fire" ignition. Harley has used a dual fire ignition system on all their bikes except a very few years ago. Try to exchange the coil for the correct one where you bought it.

My stock coil has 1 NEGATIVE and 1 positive hook up and my new accel super coil has 2 negatives and 1 POSITIVE ON IT


That's because your new coil is probably for a "single fire" ignition system. Your original coil is designed for a "dual fire" ignition system. It depends on your ignition system. If your ignition system is a stock system, it's a "dual fire" ignition system. In other words, both spark plugs fire at the same time every time the piston comes to top dead center. This generates what is known as a "wasted spark" on the cylinder that is on it's exhaust stroke but Harley has used this system for many years and still does today. I'd suggest that you look up the part number of your Accel coil and see if it is designed for use with a single fire aftermarket ignition system. If your bike uses the original ignition system, see if you can return the coil in exchange for the proper coil. Be aware that some dealers and parts sellers will not exchange or refund on electrical parts.

Ignition Coil Assembly REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 2.2L (VIN G and 4) Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Detach the assembly electrical connectors.
  4. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires.
  5. Unfasten the three ignition coil assembly-to-block bolts, then remove the assembly from the engine. Fig. 1: Exploded view of the ignition coil assembly - 2.2L (VIN 4) engine shown 87952014.gif
    To install:
  6. Position the ignition coil assembly to the engine. Install the mounting bolts, then tighten to 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm).
  7. Connect the spark plug wires to the proper coils, as tagged during removal.
  8. Attach the coil electrical connectors.
  9. Carefully lower the vehicle, then connect the negative battery cable.
2.0L (VIN 1 and H), 2.8L (VIN W) and 3.1L (VIN T) Engines NOTE: On 3.1L engines, an "Idle Learn" procedure must be performed which requires the use of a scan tool. You may wish to have the coil(s) replaced at a proper service facility.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Detach the electrical wires from the ignition coil assembly.
  3. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires from the assembly.
  4. Unfasten the mounting bolts, then remove the assembly from the engine. NOTE: On the 2.8L and 3.1L engines, with the coil pack removed, each coil can be removed and the ignition module can be removed as well. Fig. 2: On the 2.0L engine, if any part of the ignition coil is faulty, the entire coil assembly must be replaced 87952013.gif

    To install:
  5. Position the ignition coil assembly on the engine. Install the mounting bolts, then tighten to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) for the 2.8L and 3.1L engines. For the 2.0L (VIN 1) engine, tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6. Attach the plug wires to the proper coils, as tagged during removal.
  7. Fasten the ignition coil assembly wiring.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable. NOTE: On the 3.1L engine, this test must be done before the engine is started and requires the use of a Tech 1® , or equivalent, scan tool.
  9. If equipped with the 3.1L engine, perform the idle learn procedure to allow the ECM/PCM memory to be updated with the correct IAC valve pintle position and provide for a stable idle speed.
    1. Install an appropriate scan tool.
    2. Turn the ignition to the ON position, engine not running.
    3. Select IAC SYSTEM, then IDLE LEARN in the MISC TEST mode.
    4. Place the transaxle in park or neutral, as applicable.
    5. Proceed with idle learn as directed by the scan tool.

  1. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position.
  2. Separate the wiring harness connections.
  3. Unbolt the igniter.
  4. Loosen the nut holding the wire lead onto the coil.
  5. Tag and disconnect the wire lead.
  6. Lift the igniter off its mount.
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Ignition Coil TESTING 1994–95 Models
  1. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds from the time the negative battery was disconnected to start work. CAUTION
    Work must be started after 90 seconds from the time that the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the negative battery cable is disconnected from the battery.
  2. Using a 5mm hexagon wrench, remove the 2 cap nuts and the V-bank cover. Fig. 1: Remove the V-bank cover, a 5mm hexagon wrench will be needed — 1MZ-FE engine 89552g58.gif

  3. Disconnect the ignition coil wiring from the coil being tested. Fig. 2: Disconnect the ignition coil wiring from the component being tested — 1MZ-FE engine 89552g59.gif

  4. Insect the primary coil resistance using an ohmmeter. Measure the resistance (cold) between the positive and negative terminals. Resistance should be between 0.54–0.84 ohms. Fig. 3: Attach an ohmmeter to the positive and negative terminals of the coil — 1MZ-FE engine 89552g60.gif

  5. If the resistance is not within specifications, replace the ignition coil.
  6. Reattach the ignition coil wiring.
  7. Reinstall the V-bank cover. Push on the cover until a click is felt, then tighten the cap nuts.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable. Reset any digital equipment such as radio memory and the clock if necessary.
