You may have water in the bottom of the carbs or corrosion you need to try some starting fluid in the back of carbs when your problem is happening if it starts up you know you need to clean the carbs

I have a 84 Shadow 500. I have not started it in 18 years. I have kept in a garage, but I want to get it running again. I know I need to drain the gas tank, but do I need to remove the Carbs to clean them or what? Also, what do I need to do about the Radiator. Do I need to drain it and replace the fluids? Im sure I do, but just asking to be safe. Do I need to do anything else. All assistance in these matters are greatly appreciated. Ron

1983 shadow 500vt will turn over but not crank

You ill need to take off your left engine cover, remove the flywheel, and replace the starter gear (part#5) and three rollers (part#13). This is your one-way clutch that allows your starter motor to turn the engine over. The gear mating surface has become rough or chattered and is not grabbing properly.Replace these parts and your starter motor will turn the engine over again. http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/1983-honda-vt500c-shadow/o/m9690#sch421900

1983 honda shadow vt750c. not getting spark. power to coils. plugs are good. is there a way to bypass the cdi boxes so i don't have to use them

Dis-connect the negative connection from the the top of the motor and check for corrosion. The bike with not fire if it isn't getting a good ground. I have a 1983 750 shadow would not start dumped a lot of parts into it before I found the corroded connection.

1983 honda shadow vt500c Fowles plugs every 5 to 700 miles

If the plugs are fuel fouled then you should look at the carbs.sounds like running ritch. If carbs are OK then Check spark if it is orange it is week(should be whiteish blue). If the coils are producing spark but week the bike will run but eventualy foul the plugs because it can't burn all the fuel.

Vacuum line route

hi, would the hose be the carby drain, or carby vent as both of these go to atmosphere?. In regards your vacum leak, with the motor running, spray some carby cleaner or similiar near the suspected area, if the revs pick up, then you have found the suspected vacum leak area!
