Bike has been siting at least few years... last time was started...only way to get to start was squirt gas in carb... ran like ****. wanted to try to get to jets and clean or replace

Remove air cleaner. Remove fuel line. If fuel line has never been removed since bike left factory, the hose clamp is crimped on, and needs to be cut with side cutters. Remove carb. Remove float bowl. You should now be able to access jets.

With just this info.Not knowing if the engine is stock or has bigger cams or high comp pistons.I would say check the starter solenoid by running jumper wire from one side to the other.then check ALL connections for corrosion and tightness

Neg cable corroded thru.
I bet you have 12v at the battery and less at the other end of the neg cable.

I would guess stale gasoline or fuel. Try fresh fuel in the tank. If this doesn't clear the problem, you could need to have your carburetor or fuel injection system cleaned. I'm not even sure if they put fuel injection on Sportsters since I don't work on fuel injected bikes. I mostly work on the older bikes like Panheads, Shovelheads, Evos. Not too many Sportsters but have worked on a lot of Ironhead Sportsters. Try the fuel first. It's a cheap fix. Hope it works for you. Good luck with the knee replacement. My wife had one knee replaced and it works great.

the heat from the bulb being continiuosly on may have melted a wire inside your headlight?
